MEMBERSHIP EXPLORATION MONTH FEBRUARY 2020

Do you have interest in joining a service club? This is your opportunity to check out a Rotary Club in your neighborhood at no cost and no obligation! During the month of February, the Rotary Club of Ramsey is conducting a Membership Exploration Month. The Club meets every Wednesday from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. at the Ramsey Municipal Center. Come enjoy lunch on us and find out about programs in our local area and beyond. We keep the meetings to one hour so you can socialize, have lunch and discover something new and get back to work or wherever you need to be.

Following is a list of the programs we have scheduled for Membership Exploration Month (RSVP to Jay Nelson at jnelson@anokatech.edu if interested in attending):

February 5: Devin Hanson, Executive Director, Youth First Community of Promise
Youth First Community of Promise is a non-profit organization working through our local cities and the Anoka-Hennepin School District with a vision to build our youth for the future, where they are more likely to succeed academically, socially and civically, regardless of ethnic or economic boundaries. Devin will provide an update on the programs and events happening at Youth First.

February 12: Anoka High School Student, Camp Enterprise Experience
Each year the Ramsey Rotary Club sponsors a student from Anoka High School to attend Camp Enterprise, a three-day camp for high school juniors and seniors designed to introduce students to the free enterprise system and encourage entrepreneurship and ethical business practices. The experience is often life changing. Come listen to our 2019 sponsored student describe her experience at this unique business-oriented camp.

February 19: Claire Lillis, End Human Trafficking
Rotary is embarking on a mission to End Human Trafficking in communities in our region. To accomplish this, we must prevent it before it happens by: Raising Awareness; Educating Children and Youth; Reducing Risk Factors that make children vulnerable; and Stopping the Demand. Claire will provide more information about this initiative and what we can do to contribute to this effort.

February 26: Rick Heidick, Fast for Hope
We’ll get an update on Fast for Hope, which is an initiative of Rotary District 5960, whose goal is to create a replicable and sustainable model to address extreme poverty in the developing world. This model is based on a belief that the local community knows best what they need, and that the community must take ownership of any solution for it to be successful.

Rotary is 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change - across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves. See www.Rotary.org for more information.
At the District 5960 Conference of Clubs lunch session held on April 20, 2018, the Ramsey Rotary Club received the runner-up award for International Service in the small club category.  Our club supported the Guatemala Wakami Project, a Rotary micro-finance program to empower poor women.  We provided a sponsorship through the organizing Rotary club in Blaine-Ham Lake and also sponsored one of our club members to travel to Guatemala to work on the project.  We also have been provided financial support for water projects in central America through Engineers Without Borders.
Music has been an important part of leading an ordinary life for students at the Music School for Children With Disabilities in Honor of Paul Harris in Lublin, Poland. Founded by Rotary members, the school serves 20 students with various disabilities, including Down syndrome, autism, and visual impairments. The Rotary Club of Lublin-Centrum-Maria Curie-Sklodowska has provided funding with help from Rotary Foundation Matching Grants and the Henryk Wieniawski Musical Society, which houses the school.

After their son Mateusz was born with underdeveloped eyes, Mariusz and Joanna Kania looked for ways to help him be active. When he showed an aptitude for music, they looked for a teacher and were thrilled to find the Paul Harris music school.
For years, Angalia Bianca had slept in abandoned buildings throughout Chicago. She stole. She did drugs. She spent time in and out of jail for forgery, theft, trespassing, and possession of narcotics. But after she landed in prison for the seventh time, something changed -- Bianca knew she wanted a better life. She just didn’t know how to make it happen.

After serving her time, Bianca sought help from a local homeless organization, A Safe Haven, and moved to its shelter in the Rogers Park neighborhood. Bianca followed the program closely -- she attended all the required meetings, passed drug tests, and volunteered at every opportunity.
What is it like taking a large team to Africa?  It has probably been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life. In mid February, I began leading Rotary members from all over the East Coast of the United States through Ghana. I’ve tried to give the team a warm Ghanaian welcome like I’ve received on my earlier trips. A large trip is a real blessing because each person sees Ghana and our work in a different way.

A highlight for the team was greeting the chief of Sagadugu. The team got excited about buying goats and food for children in the villages where I support eight churches. It was good to see the pastors of most of the eight churches, and I had to explain that we were just passing through on our way to Bolgatanga.
