Meeting of June 19, 2019

Nilam opened the meeting, attended by 23 members and 3 guests including honorary member Pat Bartlett-Richards.

Today's Guest Speaker: Dr Paul Thistle

Dr Paul Thistle, is a much-decorated Toronto physician and surgeon who has now served at medical missionary hospitals in Zimbabwe for the past 24 years.  He was Chief Medical Officer at the Salvation Army Howard Hospital from 1995-2012, and since then has been at the Karanda Hospital.  He and his Zimbabwean-born wife Pedrinah, a registered nurse, nurse educator and midwife, have three sons.
Dr Thistle spoke of the many hospital and community projects supported by Toronto and Zimbabwe Rotary Clubs including ours at Toronto Eglinton, the successes and continuing challenges of delivering services and programs in Zimbabwe, and how we “remain focused on our purpose – not our problems.”

In further support of his aids-related work Chad presented Paul with the funds raised by Rotary Toronto Eglinton in this year’s AIDS Poker Walk - $1,250.  Paul noted, amongst much other good progress, that the incidence of HIV-positive antenatal mothers in his community has been reduced from 30% in the 1990s to 4.7% currently.

In addition to enjoying some cold drinks, we met a visiting Rotarian, Sunil Khosla from Mumbai, India, and his friend Chris, from Markham. Sunil spoke about his club, and was very interested in hearing the details of our projects.
