Amarok Society - Indigenous youth in Canada
Mar. 05, 2018 7:00 p.m.
Gem Munro has devoted his life and career to improving educational opportunities for disadvantaged people across Canada and abroad. Pursuit of this objective carried him into residence in troubled communities across most of Canada, before carrying him overseas. He is presently a Director of Amarok Society, a registered Canadian charity that provides education programmes to the very poor in Bangladesh and Pakistan, and is now beginning an initiative to develop opportunities for Indigenous youth in Canada. Gem is also an author and artist whose current book (which he has here today) is a critically acclaimed novel drawing upon his years of extraordinary experiences with aboriginal communities in Canada. (Sale of his book is a major fundraiser for Amarok Society.) For their work, Gem and his wife, Dr Tanyss Munro, were recipients of Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medals. |

Prof. Jose Etcheverry joined the Faculty of Environmental Studies at York University in 2007, where he continues to work as an Associate Professor conducting research, graduate training and undergraduate teaching on renewable energy and as Co-Chair of the Faculty's Sustainable Energy Initiative. At York University, he is also a faculty member of the Canadian Centre of German and European Studies and of the Institute for Research and Innovation in Sustainability. In 2006, he was appointed by Dr. Hermann Scheer to become one of the chairs of the World Council for Renewable Energy. In 2008, he was elected president of the Canadian Renewable Energy Alliance (and was re-elected as president in 2011). He received his PhD and MA from the University of Toronto (both theses focused in renewable energy). Prior to joining York University, he taught environmental policy at Simon Fraser University and the Center for Environment of the University of Toronto. From June 2003 until December 2008, he worked as a research and policy analyst for the David Suzuki Foundation (DSF), where he published research on renewable energy (Smart Generation: Powering Ontario with Renewable Energy) and on energy efficiency (Bright Future: Avoiding Blackouts in Ontario). During his career at DSF, he represented the Suzuki Foundation in the Alternative Energy Task Force organized by BC Premier Gordon Campbell and in the Climate negotiations held in Montreal (2005) and Bonn (2006). Also, he represented Dr. Suzuki in the Advisory Committee of the Hon. Dwight Duncan, when Mr. Duncan was Ontario's Minister of Energy. Prior to joining the David Suzuki Foundation, he worked for the climate change team of the Global Environment Facility in Washington DC and also was an intern for the Mexican Electricity Research Institute. He was a researcher and Canadian correspondent for the global Renewables Status Reports (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011 editions), which are published by Worldwatch Institute on behalf of REN21 (REN21 is a global policy network organized after the 2004 International Bonn Conference on Renewable Energy, for details see www.ren21.net). In October 2010, he was nominated by the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) to join two OPA advisory committees that reviewed the performance of the Ontario Micro FIT and Feed-in Tariff programs. In 2012, he helped organize RETSCREEN's First International Training Institute (http://www.retscreen.net/ang/training_institute.php) and was also an invited participant to a parliamentary hearing (hosted by the World Future Council, the Nordic Folkecenter and the Climate Service Center (CSC) of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht) aimed at sharing knowledge, exchange ideas, develop strategies and build up networks in order to implement 100% Renewable Energies (RE) targets in Europe. Currently, he is a Board Member of the Windfall Ecology Centre, an Advisor of the Small Change Fund, and a faculty member of the Institute for Research and Innovation in Sustainability and the Canadian Centre for German and European Studies. His academic research is focused on renewable energy technology transfer, innovative training and knowledge mobilization techniques, climate change mitigation and sustainable energy policies. |
