Dr Albert Schweitzer, Nobel Prize winner, surgeon, and humanist, said the true purpose of human life is to serve, to show compassion and kindness, and have the will to help others. These qualities represent the life of Rotarian Fischel Kaufman, who passed away on 8 July.
According to past president Deon Erasmus, Kaufie was the longest serving member of the Rotary Club of Paarl and a pillar in our club.
“He exemplified everything a Rotarian stands for, and set an example for all of us. He was a mentor and dear friend, and always carried Paarl Rotary close to his heart.
“Few could resist his gently persuasive ways once he decided that someone was a good candidate to become a member of our club. He recruited more members than any of us, and was an excellent judge of character. Kaufie was also a great story teller – a gift that is highly appreciated in all societies. His stories made a valuable contribution to the collective history of the communities in this special valley where he was born, grew up, and lived his whole adult life.
“His initiatives and commitment to serve are there for all to see. From the establishment of Drakenstein Palliative Hospice, to Island of Hope and the Senior’s Concert, among many others. He was always at the forefront of club activities and fundraising efforts – actively marshalling, selling raffle tickets and candy floss, or braaiing boerewors and washing up after events. Nothing was too much effort.
“Kaufie’s dedication was widely recognised, not only more than once in Rotary’s highest award – the Paul Harris award - but more importantly, in our own hearts and minds where we cherish his memory.
“He truly lived Rotary’s essence of Service Above Self and the Four Way Test: Is it the truth, is it fair to all concerned, will it build goodwill and better friendships, will it be beneficial to all.
“We will remember Kaufie for this. He was a true mensch, a kind man.”
- Kaufie leaves his wife June, sons Mark and Errol, and four grandchildren.
