Collect aCan - 30 June 2019
One of the best things about doing Collect a Can is seeing parents trying to teach their children about giving. The children seem to enjoy putting their slection of goods into the collection baskets. The little boy in the photo gave a packet of biscuits and Two minute noodles.

The almost two trolleys of goods were taken by Godfrey and Eve to the Salvation Army Mens Home.
Thank you message from Natalie Polock <gm@sportingchance.co.za

To the “best sauce squirters, ball pumpers and hotdog makers”, THANK YOU so very much for all your hard work at our Calypso Cricket festival last week. Thank you for the funding that allows us to bring the children to the beach and give them this opportunity. We can’t put into words how much we appreciate your input, it’s always special to see the familiar friendly faces and receive the warm hugs and to witness “the machine at work”. Our behind the scenes has become a breeze and that’s thanks to all of your efforts.

Please convey our thanks to all involved.

Wishing you all a happy and healthy festive season.

Best wishes
The Sporting Chance team

History from the "Trummel"
The trummel (a metal trunk)  that for many years has held the Signal Hill banners / banner stands / President's chain / Bell / etc. has been removed from the Yacht Club. All the items needed for our meeting are now contained in a "bag on wheels" and Peter Hugo will bring this every week.

While clearing out the trummel, we discovered an old newspaper dating back to Thursday June 12 1986.
What a surprise the headlines were :

Dear fellow Rotarians,
Apology for not being able to run the meeting today as planned. Police and Customs officials took our prospective new member, to be inducted today, into their care as they did not accept his driver licence (valid European licence) , his ID (valid Lichtenstein ID) and he had left his passport in his flat. This happened at the entrance of the harbour. So they treated him as an potential illegal alien.
The Signal Hill Race Day for 2018 was held at the Kenilworth Race Course on 18th August 2018.
After several days of much needed rain in Cape Town, Saturday was a beautiful clear day with blue skies and spring flowers starting to bloom.

Our newest Rotarian, Godfrey Needham took on the daunting task of being the Master of Ceremonies to keep the event running smoothly and on time.
Seumas Reynolds and Rex Hillier did an amazing job selling raffle tickets and Rex kept track of  all the auction items and winners.
Helen Reynolds adjudicated and awarded the prizes for the Best dressed and Best/Most fun Hat competitions.
Several members of the Club spent Sunday 19th August 2018 at the One to One event.
Our stand had buckets which the guests had to try and get bean bags into.

A comment from  member Clint Gould was
Thoroughly enjoyed!!!
We must acknowledge the brilliant and helpful, Rio, from Interact. He was a charmer!
We would like to thank Carlos Gomes from "Wellness Warehouse" for supplying the sweets that were given to all the guests.
Also, thanks to all Signal Hill members who helped on the day and especially to Seumas for arranging the sweets.

ONE  to ONE is a communal initiative, a fair arranged exclusively for the intellectually disabled.  Public involvement in this event centres around being a stall holder offering a game challenge, or volunteering to be a “friend” to the handicapped guest and sharing the enjoyment and excitement of the handicapped guest on a one-to-one basis.
