“A fantastic response from the community supports this organization.”

On January 29, 2020, Stittsville Rotarians gathered at the Stittsville Food Bank at 1631 Main Street to offer their services organizing food items that had recently been donated and make their own financial donation to the organization. In operation since 1992, this Food Bank relies entirely on the local community for volunteers and for all donations of food items or money.
Theresa Qadri, Chair of the Board of Directors, explained how the Food Bank works: “There are food bins in 7 locations such as Brown’s Independent, Sobeys, Food Basics, Cardel Recreation Centre, Pottery Playhouse and Giant Tiger where Stittsville residents can donate food items. Our volunteers pick up the donations daily and bring them back to the food bank where they are sorted and shelved. Our procedures are modernized and now clients use email to submit their grocery list of needed items. We also work with local churches, group homes and other organizations to support the needy in Stittsville and the surrounding rural areas.”
She added that “50 unpaid volunteers in regular shifts in a month and 75 in the total operation make the system work well. High school students can earn community hours for service at the food bank and Youth Sessions offered every second Saturday provide that opportunity.
No longer a service offering only dry food goods, approximately $60,000 in financial donations also provides fresh foods such as meat, dairy, eggs and produce to approximately 4,000 clients annually. In return, this non-profit registered charity can offer tax receipts for individual financial donations.” Visit the website www.stittsvillefoodbank.ca or check out the stories on Facebook.
