Our guest speaker today was Mayor Jim Watson.

The Mayor highlighted the program of events organized for the 150th anniversary celebrations in 2017 that were designed to attract visitors to the city throughout the entire year. It was a successful initiative as an additional 1.7 million more tourists visited Ottawa and boosted the economy. The national and international events emphasized the concept that “Ottawa welcomes the world" and he hoped that this trend would continue in 2018. Tourism is the third largest employer in the city.

The budget was the next topic of the Mayor’s presentation and he focused on infrastructure and the LRT in particular. An environmental assessment is already underway to determine the best LRT route to Stittsville, as well as an estimate for the its cost in preparation for the time when financing may be available for its construction.  The Mayor was well aware of the needs of  Stittsville and recognized the efforts of Councillor Qadri in dealing with the issues.
