Rotarians, students and school staff gathered together to plant a small oak tree and remember an important event in Canada’s history.
The tree-planting ceremony on October 02 2019 at École secondaire catholique Paul-Demarais was another step in promoting the memory and legacy of Canadians who fought in the First World War. The Battle of Vimy Ridge in northern France, April 9th to 12th, 1917 is considered to be one of the defining events in the history of our nation.
As part of a Canada-wide commemorative effort in 2017 by Vimy Oaks Legacy to create a living memorial, Stittsville Rotarians donated to each of the community high schools a “Vimy Oak” sapling that is a descendant of acorns gathered after the Battle of Vimy Ridge and planted in Canada by a Canadian soldier, Lieutenant Leslie Miller. An example of important historical events made real for students and their parents in the community.
