Canadian Funeral Peer Support addresses the mental health needs of professionals in funeral services.

In his presentation to the Stittsville Rotary club on November 11 2020, Rotarian Michael focused on mental health issues of professional people who work in the funeral services industry. They are under ongoing pressure from many factors including the irregular work hours, sometimes horrific circumstances of death as well as a focus on meeting the needs of individuals who are clients while neglecting their own personal needs. Often there is a struggle to maintain emotional and mental health and avoid depression; in some situations, a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSB) can be made.
In 2017, Michael and 3 of his co-workers formed the Canadian Funeral Peer Support group to address the mental health needs of workers in funeral services. Since then a network of groups has formed across Canada and there is interest in United States as well.
What is the mission of such groups? The following description can be found on their website:
Canadian Funeral Peer Support provides a healthy outlet to debrief and meet other people who can relate. This allows everyone the opportunity to feel connected, validated and understood in a supportive, non-judgmental environment.
Founded on key principles such as respect and shared responsibility, peer support is based on the belief that people who have faced and overcome adversity can provide useful support and mentorship to others facing similar situations.
The mission is to be Canada’s leader in providing resources for the wellness of funeral professionals; to share our personal experiences, educate and advocate; and to foster a network of peer support groups across the country.” http://www.funeralpeersupport.com/.
Michael concluded his presentation with the suggestion that a person who is experiencing mental health issues should reach out and make a call for assistance. Ultimately, we need each other and we need to care for each other.
