ROTARY CLUB OF CANBERRA - CHANGEOVER DINNER AND CELEBRATIONS AT THE Dear Members A must attend social event for our whole Club and one of the most important dates in our Rotary Calendar. It is the time to celebrate our achievements under President George's leadership over the past year and to look forward to the year ahead as President Helen steps into the role with a new leadership style, new ideas, and amongst other projects, great plans for our 90th Birthday celebrations. We have booked the entire restaurant for the evening and Stephen Ng, the owner, promises a delicious banquet for the very reasonable price of $50pp. The bar will be open for those who wish to purchase drinks. For this special price there is the requirement that we have 50 people attending. This number should be easily obtained as we have 63 members, and lots of friends and partners who can join us in the celebrations. Please ensure you register your attendance by Wednesday 5 July. The Board looks forward to seeing you all at this special event. Payment can be made at the door on the evening or you can pay online at: Rotary Club of Canberra Account: 232936633

Another Century Another Long War Australia is involved in the early stages of a conflict that may last for the rest of the century and potentially beyond. Terrorism is but a symptom of a broader conflict in which the fundamental threat is from radical Islamists who are intent on establishing Islam as the foundation of a new world order. It’s a conflict between radical Islamists and modern secular, mostly Western, states. The likely duration of the conflict is due to the intrinsic and widespread appeal of the underlying ideology, the youth of those currently involved, their fervour and the inability of those under attack to either realise or accept the true nature of the threat.
Peter Leahy retired from the Army in July 2008 after a 37 year career as a soldier. He concluded his career in the Army with the rank of Lieutenant General after a six year appointment as the Chief of Army. Since leaving the Army Peter has joined the University of Canberra as a Professor and the foundation Director of the National Security Institute where he teaches, writes and commentates on defence and security matters. He is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and has been appointed to the Boards of a number of ASX listed companies. He is involved in charities including as the Chairman of both Soldier On and the Australian International Military Games, which will bring the Invictus Games to Australia in 2018. In 2014 he was appointed by the Minister for Defence as a member of the First Principles Review into the Department of Defence. His experience is acknowledged internationally with his recognition through awards at the highest levels by the United States, France, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and Cambodia.

Our meeting on Monday will have a revised Agenda to incorporate our memories of Jack Olsson. Steve Hill, District Governor will lead this section of the session with input from other Past Presidents and Rotarians. Please join us as we remember this remarkable man. Following this session, we will continue with the Agenda forgoing the sergeants session
Our Rotary member vocational speaker today is Dr Robin Bell. Robin is a Kiwi. He attended Scots College, Wellington, graduated M.Sc in physics at Victoria University in 1964, and gained his D.Phil. in nuclear physics at Oxford in 1969. Robin then joined the ANU nuclear physics team and also contributed to ANU life as a Staff Tutor at Bruce Hall, then as Deputy Master of Burgmann College. By 1975 Australia had decided to limit its nuclear program so Robin did an Ll.B. at the ANU. In 1978, he joined the Commonwealth AG’s Department and contributed to managing legal consequences of technological advances, especially re computers and mass media. In particular he reviewed both copyright and FOI legislation. IN 1988 Robin became Deputy Commonwealth Ombudsman and in 1991 Deputy Commonwealth Electoral Commissioner. He retired from the APS in 1999 and, with Minter Ellison, became in-house legal counsel to Professional Services Review (which investigates inappropriate medical practice). Robin retired in 2005. Robin and his wife Margot live in Canberra and have four adult children. Robin is totally hopeless at most sports but used to enjoy badminton, squash and skiing, and still plays tennis regularly.
Victoria University has a long history of Antarctic research and the Dry Valleys of South Victoria Land near McMurdo Sound afford a rare opportunity to study Antarctic geology, so-often concealed by ice. Furthermore, ice-covered lakes in those valleys also offer an even rarer opportunity to learn something of the local climate. The 1969 summer expedition included two physicists and a biologist. Robin was responsible for investigating several lakes in those valleys and, in particular, to ascertain whether high water temperatures deep in one lake were due to solar heating or to geothermal effects (the active volcano Mt Erebus is nearby). Uni-celled denizens of these lakes were also of biological interest. Robin will show photos of these remarkable valleys and lakes and explain how that research contributed to understanding local Antarctic conditions. |

Parliament House Education Centre - Vocational program Please register now so that PH education officers know how many people to expect “The next Club vocational visit will be on 30 October to the Education Centre at the Parliamentary Education Office. Anne Kennedy who is well known to the Club through he active support for the RAIC program has advised that they would be delighted to host a group of Rotarians to come and observe a role-play program for students at the centre. Anne has also advised that there will be some time set aside afterwards for her to talk to our group. The role play is part of the RAIC program which those who have hosted RAIC students will know about. I encourage members to come along to this event as it will give members a better idea of what we are sponsoring through RAIC and the opportunity students have to learn about our Parliamentary system. We need to have numbers of those interested in attending as soon as possible. “

PROFESSOR SHARON FRIEL, DIRECTOR AND PROFESSOR OF HEALTH EQUITY AND ARC A time for hope. Pursuing a vision of a fair, sustainable and healthy world. The confluence of global environmental degradation, social inequities, and inequities in health outcomes shines a light on fundamental ruptures in society. A systems view of humanity reminds us that this status quo is not static. The shifting political and economic sands, globally, provide an important window of opportunity to collectively change the status quo towards a society where communities are able to live with dignity, good health and sustainably. This presentation discusses how such rebalancing of the system depends on a collective vision, the reimagining the use of structural regulatory powers, and the agency of networks of concerned citizens. Each of us concerned about human health, environmental sustainability and social justice are model mongers and chaotic innovators – mobilising and working in different ways and in different venues towards a vision of fair and just systems. Rebalancing the existing inequities and achieving positive outcomes depends on networked combinations of different approaches rather than grabbing at one lever of influence. In a hyper-connected world there are many partners to help create networked combinations of hope.
Sharon has been a public health academic since 1992. In January 2010 she was awarded an Australian Research Council Future Fellowship to investigate the interface between health equity, social determinants and climate change, based at the ANU National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health. |
