John Kerin PHF The RC Burley Griffin have invited the RC of Canberra together with members of the Commonwealth Club to this meeting.
The speaker John Kerin PHF replaced Paul Keating as Treasurer under Bob Hawke and served many years in key ministerial roles for the Labor Government. He was highly regarded as Minister for Primary Industry. John Kerin has had a long and distinguished career both inside and outside politics. He worked for the Australian Buerau of Agriculturral and Resource Economics before his first stint in Parliament from Dec 1972 to Dec 1975. He returned in 1978 and was Minister for Primary Industries. He remains active across a range of activities in Public Policy in Australia. In October 2008 he was appointed to the Board of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation. In October 2010 he ws appointed Chair of the Crawford Fund which aims to increase Australia's engagement in International agricultural research, development and education. |

DR DAVID MARSHALL WILL PRESENT ON THE TOPIC AUSTRALIAN POLITICIANS LOSS OF CREDIBILITY REINFORCED BY THEIR COMMUNICATION SKILLS AND BEHAVIOUR
David has been a Rotarian since 1979, when he returned from India as a member of a South Australian Rotary Group Exchange team. David's career started as an on air radio announcer in Berri South Australia, then moving into radio station management working with Channel 9 for 2 years, and came to Canberra in 1988 to run the newly acquired Austereo stations FM104.7 /2CA. David then became the ACT Tourism Commissioner for six years. In 2000 he founded Talkforce Communications, which runs media training programs for senior executives, and provides communications advice to both Government agencies and the private sector across Australia. David's doctoral thesis focussed on Prime Minister John Howard, and examined how the Office of the Prime Minister managed its media and communications responsibilities across federal departments and with the wider Australian community. David's Rotary presentation will focus on how electors have lost faith in politicians through their unacceptable behaviours exposed by a very critical and probing media.

MARTIN FISK - CEO MENSLINK
Martin is the Chief Executive of Menslink and joined in March 2011 after a twenty-five year career in both the private and public sectors, including nearly ten years running his own business and a few years as a senior Federal Public Servant. Since joining Menslink, he has significantly expanded the reach of both the mentoring and counselling programs which now provide free services to more young men across Canberra than ever before. An active campaigner for young men, Martin speaks to schools, businesses and community groups across the region about issues facing young men, their families and communities, including violence, mental health, drugs and alcohol and suicide – still the leading cause of death in men under 40. Martin will be talking about issues facing young men in our community, some root causes of violence (especially family violence) and what Menslink is doing about it.

CANBERRA BUSINESS CHAMBER - CEO ROBYN HENDRY Robyn Hendry is currently the Chief Executive Officer of Canberra Business Chamber. She has held this position since May 2015. The Chamber was established in October 2014 as a result of the Canberra Business Council and the ACT Region Chamber of Commerce coming together to form a single entity to represent businesses in the ACT Region.
Robyn has worked in senior executive positions for over 20 years in Australia, New Zealand and PNG. Most recently, prior to joining the Canberra Business Chamber, she held the position of Chief Executive Officer for the Canberra Convention Bureau. She has also held senior management positions in multinational hotel companies in food and beverage, human resource management, general management and strategic development. At the 2011 Tourism Awards, Robyn was awarded Outstanding Contribution by an Individual for the ACT & Region.
Robyn is currently a Director of the Cultural Faculties Corporation (CFC) and Tennis ACT. She has held numerous Directorships including: President and Director Association of Australian Convention Bureaux (AACB), Director Business Event Council of Australia (BECA), Advisory Group Member Department of Immigration Tourism Visa Advisory Group (TVAG), Councilor Tourism Quality Council of Australia (TQCA), Director Exhibition Park Corporation (EPIC), Director Australian Science Festival, and Director Capital Arts Patrons Organization (CAPO).
Robyn has a Bachelor of Management (Tourism), Advanced Diploma in Hospitality and is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD).

BRAZILIAN EMBASSY COCKTAIL RECEPTION 25 APRIL-INVITATION Dear Members As previously announced, the Rotary Club of Canberra has been invited by His Excellency, Manual Innocencio De Lacerda Santas Jr, Ambassador of the Federative Republic of Brazil and Mrs Sonia Maria Queiroz de Lacerda Santos to a Cocktail Reception to commemorate Anzac Day and Brazilian Fighter Squadron Day, at the Embassy on 25 April 2017 commencing at 5.00pm. The event is also supported by the Embassy of Italy. Our role is to come along to the event with our families and friends and others whom we think will be interested in attending, with the aim of attracting around 50 members - or more. The Embassy staff will send invitations to Military Attaches, Defence personnel, military historians and partners. A representative of the Governor-General will be invited. This should be a great opportunity for us to socialise in a wonderful venue while we commemorate Anzac Day and Brazilian Fighter Squadron Day, so I urge you to put this date in your diaries and come along on the 25th.

You will have heard that, as in previous years, 11 Peace Fellows who are undertaking the Masters in International Studies in Peace and Conflict Resolution at the Rotary Centre at UQ in Brisbane will be visiting Canberra 29 April – 2 May, 2017. The Fellows will follow a program of professional, academic and cultural visits that aims to introduce them to Canberra and some key actors in the peace and conflict resolution space here.
The highlight of this visit will be the gala dinner to be held on the evening of Monday May 1, at the Commonwealth Club, at which the Peace Fellows will describe their work and talk about their plans. This year we are honoured to have the dinner hosted by RI President Elect Ian Riseley, and we will be joined by members of the diplomatic community and government for this very special event. Background to RAIC We are very pleased to advise that the Guest Speaker speaker for this event is Dr Subho Banerjee. Dr Subho BanerjeeSkills and TrainingSubho Banerjee took up his position as a Deputy Secretary in the Department of Education and Training in December 2014. He is responsible for the skills and training functions of the Department. He has previously held senior executive positions in a number of Australian Public Service departments, providing policy advice across a broad range of environmental, social and economic policy issues. Subho has also worked as a management consultant in the private sector, and for an Indigenous policy think-tank Subho has a BSc and a PhD in physics from the Australian National University. He also completed masters studies in environmental policy, and economic and social history, at the University of Oxford, where he was a Rhodes scholar. |

The owners Mark Santos and Anthony Hill previously ran the Noel Coward Hotel in Elbury Street , just behind Selfridges in London’s Oxford Street. Coward lived in the house for some time. When Vivaldi began dinner/show packages some fourteen years ago, Coward performances featured heavily. Vivaldi’s closes in the middle of June in preparation for the destruction of the Arts Centre at ANU. As part of the last hurrah, Papermoon and Vivaldi productions will present the double bill of two of the earliest revue sketches written by Coward The play will be directed by Tony Turner, former Ethel Tory Head of Drama at the ANU designed by Ian Croker and costumed by Anna Senior
‘Mild Oats’, an early Coward, penned in 1922 when the author was but 23 and here adapted for the stage raises those themes that will later be developed in his more famous plays, films and songs, but is untypical of him in that both the comedy and poignancy depend not so much on the dialogue as they do on the situation itself, on the gaps and silences, on the stomach-churning awkwardness

The Rotary Fitness Initiative Chris will focus his talk on Rotary Fitness. Chris Edwards (1959-) was born in Sydney, Australia, and grew up in the Blue Mountains and Bathurst district of NSW. He made his living in the advertising industry before becoming a Leadership and Life coach in 2007. Known as the youngest 'City2Surf Legend' (having completed every one of the famous Sydney fun runs). His first major book was 'Begin With The End In Mind: The Untold Story Of The City2Surf' that brought the true history and impact of this event to light. His interests are in Australasian history, art and the promotion of health and wellbeing. |

Vocational Visit to Questacon organised by our Club's Vocational Director - 2017-2018, Alison Russell-French. Dear all “ The Questacon tour guides who will host Monday’s vocational visit to the Deakin Questacon facility will be Senior Managers, Sally D’Addio and Tamara Niznik. Could all attending please gather outside the front entrance of the Ian Potter Foundation Technology Learning Centre in Deakin at 12noon where Sally and Tamara will collect us and take us on the tour. A sandwich lunch with coffee and tea will be provided in the Boardroom of the facility from 1.00pm until 2.00pm. The cost of the lunch will be met from the Vocational Services budget allocation. Another Century Another Long War Australia is involved in the early stages of a conflict that may last for the rest of the century and potentially beyond. Terrorism is but a symptom of a broader conflict in which the fundamental threat is from radical Islamists who are intent on establishing Islam as the foundation of a new world order. It’s a conflict between radical Islamists and modern secular, mostly Western, states. The likely duration of the conflict is due to the intrinsic and widespread appeal of the underlying ideology, the youth of those currently involved, their fervour and the inability of those under attack to either realise or accept the true nature of the threat.
Peter Leahy retired from the Army in July 2008 after a 37 year career as a soldier. He concluded his career in the Army with the rank of Lieutenant General after a six year appointment as the Chief of Army. He commanded the Australian Army during a period of unprecedented operational activity, challenge, tempo and change. Since leaving the Army Peter has joined the University of Canberra as a Professor and the foundation Director of the National Security Institute where he teaches, writes and commentates on defence and security matters. He is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and has been appointed to the Boards of a number of ASX listed companies. He is involved in charities including as the Chairman of both Soldier On and the Australian International Military Games, which will bring the Invictus Games to Australia in 2018. In 2014 he was appointed by the Minister for Defence as a member of the First Principles Review into the Department of Defence. His experience is acknowledged internationally with his recognition through awards at the highest levels by the United States, France, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and Cambodia.

ACT Law Society's President Ms Sarah Avery Sarah is a lawyer with ten years' experience practising in the Australian Capital Territory. Sarah has assisted clients with personal injury claims, other civil issues, and criminal matters. Sarah has also represented specialised professional indemnity insurers, and has a keen interest in assisting professionals (including lawyers) facing occupational discipline proceedings and negligence claims. Admitted in 2007, Sarah has been engaged with people across the whole of the legal community and the ACT community. She was appointed senior Vice-President of the Law Society in 2015. She is also on the Pro-Bono Clearing House Panel, the Legal Aid Review Panel, the Functions and Law Week Committee, the Legal Profession Act & Ethics Committee, and is a mentor in the Young Lawyers Mentor Program and the Out for Australia Mentor Program. Sarah served as a member of the Law Society Council during 2009-2012, and has also been a member of the Criminal Law Committee. Sarah’s first-hand experience with several of the ACT’s most controversial laws, and front-line experience with the ACT judicial system means that she brings a valuable perspective and experience to the Council. Sarah brings a fresh and enthusiastic approach to the Presidency, along with a strong desire to protect the interests and reputation of the ACT legal community while serving the broader community. |
