In less than one hundred days, the Mayor of Alexandrina and the community of Goolwa will be welcoming Cittaslow representatives from all around the world.  Mayors and delegates from more than 200 towns from 30 nations will come to Goolwa for the 2017 Cittaslow International General Assembly.  Last year it was held in Portugal and next year it will be in France, but this year, the attention from 9 to 12 May will be on Goolwa, Australia.
Delegates will attend presentations, displays and dinners and will experience different locations as they tour the region.  A combined Alexandrina Council and Cittaslow Goolwa team has been planning this event for several years.  Visitors will either stay in local accommodation places or be hosted by Goolwa families.  Some locals have been learning Italian which together with English are the two official languages of Cittaslow International.
To present our unique region to Mayors and Delegates for an Assembly that will be in the southern hemisphere for the first time and outside Europe for only the second time, many resources (time, talents and money) are required.  Cittaslow Goolwa has received assistance from Alexandrina Council, the Department of Primary Industries and Regions SA and Lions.  The Committee has been delighted to receive a generous cheque from the Rotary Club of Goolwa which has been a long-time supporter of community programs. Rotary members played an important role in Goolwa’s accreditation which was approved in 2007.
Cittaslow combines the efforts of the council, businesses and community groups plus individuals to identify the unique character of the region and encourage its sustainability.  This covers environmental policies, heritage, tourism, education, community development and urban development.  It also supports the local food production, development and appreciation.
The 10th Cittaslow International General Assembly will give Goolwa a chance to showcase those things that make us special.  If you want to know more about Cittaslow or the Assembly, drop into the new Cittaslow building at the corner of Cadell Street and Goolwa Terrace, Wednesday to Sunday between 10am and 4pm.
