President Jim Madder chaired this the last meeting of 2021 on the Winter Solstice. We had a fine presentation from Grand Chief Derek Fox of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation and many kind wishes and reflections from members.  We were particularly happy to welcome back Past-President Laurie Tulloch.

Co-hosts: Kevin Holloway and Jim Madder.  Anthem was a charming video found by Kevin Holloway.  Land acknowledgement by Jim Madder

FEATURE PRESENTATION:  Grand Chief Derek Fox of Nishnawbe Aski Nation

Grand Chief Derek Fox of Nishnawbe Aski Nation spoke to us today.  NAN represents 49 exceptionally diverse First Nations in northern Ontario of which 32 are fly-in only.  Established in the late 1970s, NAN strives for unity, strength and success and focuses on youth, women and elders, developing harmony and relevant insightful solutions to the many challenges of Indigenous peoples in this area.

Grand Chief Fox grew up in Thunder Bay and loves the city – it is his home base.  His family is from Bearskin Lake.  His father had also been Grand Chief.  Grand Chief Fox has a law degree, articled with our own Doug Shanks at Cheadles, and practiced law for two years before joining NAN.

Clearly an optimist, Grand Chief Fox touched on NAN Territory challenges and the many root causes.  Meeting them will require team effort and resolve.

Rotarians at our meeting responded to his cordial invitation to forge synergies with our Club.  Many questions and suggestions centered on how to get the ball rolling. A meeting in the new year would be a good start. Youth programming in sports and with the Field Naturalists, a possible youth internship in broadcasting with Hector Dougall were a couple of great ideas.

President-Elect Brian Walmark introduced and thanked Grand Chief Fox. Doug Shanks also welcomed him back.
