Got a cell phone?

If you have a cell phone, you can download the Clubrunner App. It's a blue square logo with CR in the middle. With your Clubrunner login, you can instantly pull up a Members list with addresses, phone numbers and email addresses... all with one touch activation. So you can phone another member with one button! Or send them an email the same way! It also provides our Meeting information and mapping for addresses using Googlemaps.
If you are interested I can help you download and activate it.
Cheers

Who are we?

The Kamloops Grasslands Probus Club was created in the fall of 2016, joining 3 other Kamloops Clubs providing social and educational opportunities for Seniors.
Our Club meets 9 times a year (no July, Aug and Jan) with a Speaker, and Coffee plus goodies. We enjoy the social time and there's no requirement to attend... neat eh?
We do no fundraising or volunteer work, aside from the wonderful members who DO volunteer to make our Club run.
Our dues go to running the Club and it's activities.
A key piece of our Club are the various Interest Groups. A fun way to meet new people while participating in an activity or common interest.
Sound interesting?

President's Message

The first September I was retired I was unexpectedly surprised by my delight in waking up each morning with no obligation of back to school, back to work, back to negotiating a tighter schedule.  September is a glorious month to say hello to renewing our Probus friendships.

A commemorative plaque for the Probus Club of Leeds and Grenville states:

Our strength is Fellowship
Our success is Participation

We are enriched by the friends and experiences Grasslands Probus provides us.  The club does not oblige you to take part, but we are all better off for it.  Your management committee is made up of club members and a successful club is one that benefits from a variety of people participating.
This September I hope you enjoy not being back in the old harness, but don't let it exclude you from the rewards of giving back to the club.

Our Club Newsletter

Posted by Sean McKenna
Our emailed Club Newsletter - provided wonderfully by Val for the last 3 years - provides each member with an update from the Club, and at the bottom of each newsletter it displays what Interest Groups the member is signed up for!
Speaking of Val, she is stepping down, so we need a new Newsletter Editor this fall. Training is provided and support is available always. Folks, it's only 9 Newsletters in a year....
Please step up and help the Club with this.
Thanks

I was asked today “What exactly is Probus?”  And I was off to the races enthusing about a social club, where membership requires no meeting attendance and no participation; but why wouldn't you?

When I first heard about Probus in Kamloops, I thought: when I retire, that is the place for me.  Imagine a resource of people who live in my community, are free from their work schedule and are looking for new friends with common interests.

I love to read advice columns and a common issue that comes up is: My kids are grown, I am now retired and I am ready to live this great new chapter in my life, but I feel lonely.

Probus can't make you happy, but it can give you an opportunity to regularly encounter a variety of friendly faces.  Soon, you will be running into Probus acquaintances in the ATM line, during theatre intermission, and walking in the park.

This year Kamloops Grasslands Probus membership is 150 including Twenty-Four! new members.
So, participate and don't wait for a friend to go with you.  You have joined a membership of people that want to meet you and do fun stuff together.

Maybe I'll see you hot gluing your fingers in a craft club, or asking about last month's guest speaker, or telling me about trying to locate a copy of the Book Club's latest title, or in one of our wonderful nature parks rolling your eyes at my hysterically barking dog.  It's always nice to see a friend!

“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers. It would be terrible if we just skipped from September to November, wouldn’t it?"  Anne of Green Gables, LM Montgomery.

October the Kamloops Grasslands will conclude its second year.  This year Registration renewal occurred in September rather than October in advance of the Annual General Meeting.  The intention of the earlier registration was to be better prepared to both report out on the 2017-2018 budget and make a fair prediction of the 2018-2019 budget for the incoming executive.  Final registraton numbers still to come.  At newsletter press time 87% of members have renewed.  Ongoing member registration ends Sept 30th.  New members are being invited to register and join their first meeting at the AGM October 4th. Thank you to Av and Reg for their diligent work on Membership Renewal/Registration.  Probus Management anticipates 144 members.  If KGPC members think a friend may want to join the Kamloops Grasslands Probus Club you should let Av Loerke know as there may be a few spaces available for new members after final registration tally in October.  See the email link on this newsletter for Av.
I look forward to the October AGM where Probus welcomes many new members to the management team.  The Slate for Election at the AGM include Hospitality Coordinator, Club Activity Coordinator, Membership Coordinator, Speaker Coordinator, Secretary, Treasurer, Vice-President, and President.  Join me in thanking the outgoing management team members: Eleanor Thompson and Maureen Wormsbecker (Hospitality Coordinators), Jennifer McKenna (Club Activity Coordinator), Av Loerke (Membership Coordinator), Bill Lee (Speaker Coordinator), Judy Treherne (Secretary), Reg Lucas (Treasurer), Sean McKenna (Past-President).  Sean and Jennifer are not actually outgoing as they have one more year in their roles of Interest Group Coordinator (Jennifer) and Sean (Webmaster/Historian). Thank you also to Val Collins (Newsletter Editor) who has agreed to extend her term 1 year to facilitate management transition.
It is the volunteerism of Probus Members that makes the club successful and out retirements more enjoyable.  A little time, a few skills, and a willing spirit goes a long way when people come together for the benefit of others.  My sincere thanks to all of the volunteers at Probus, the management team, the club activity committee members, the interest group coordinators, members who agree to bake or cook for events, and members who help set up and take down venues, assistants in meetings, events and activities. Probus is looking to fill the role of Secretary for a two year term. Please contact Cheryl Zawaduk if interested and able. Thank you.
At the AGM on October 4th there will be an annual report, election, budget review and proposal.  There will not be a speaker.  The Club Activity Committee has planned a social after the AGM.  Please join for the business, fun, and of course coffee/tea.

Birthdays
Wishing the September and October Probus Members a great birthday, a good month, and grand year.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Probus Perspectives  June 2018

Far up in the deep blue sky,
Great white clouds are floating by;
All the world is dressed in green; Many happy birds are seen,
Roses bright and sunshine clear
show that lovely June is here.
 F. G. Sanders

June has arrived.  One half of 2018 is a memory and the next half is a blank slate waiting to be imagined and lived.  Where does the time go and what will we do in the future?  Members of Probus have been busy in June with hiking, biking, eating/dining, motorcycling, crafting, kayaking, golfing, reading, playing bridge, going on bus trips/travelling, and other forms of fun.  Please keep the Probus Newsletter editor Val Collins apprised of Probus related events/activities.

June 28th is the 169thday of the year and our next Grasslands Probus general meeting.  This general meeting will be at the Yacht Club on River Street.  Coffee for this meeting will be brought in and served at the break between speaker and meeting.  Speaker scheduled to begin at 1000.  Venue holds 115.  Regrets in advance if not all members can be accommodated at this temporary location. Address:  1140 River St

This last meeting of the Season will set the stage for the fall of 2018.  As a group members need to make a decision as to time/day and place for our regular meetings now that CSI Brock can no longer offer us the last Thursday of the month. The Kamloops Grasslands Probus Club Management has been assessing options.  Three venues are outlined in a brief cost-benefit analysis; one where the club met 2017-2018 (Brock), one new place  (St. Andrew's Presbyterian Basement on 6th Avenue Downtown Kamloops), and one where the club met in 2016-2017 (Hal Rogers).  Should the club move to another venue a Grasslands Probus Member has offered to donate a digital projector which would otherwise cost the club approximately $50/month to rent.  Probus Grasslands Management team is recommending Option B as it offers the possibility to reduce the financial cost while also limiting the volunteer labour to mid-range, is a suitable size with good parking, is in a central location, and the timing allows for an earlier start in September and an earlier finish in June.  The Kamloops Probus Club, the first one in Kamloops, meets at St. Andrews on the last Thursday of the month.
Venue A: Center for Seniors Information at Brock. If the club opts to remain with CSI (size rated for 115) member meetings must be held the first Tuesday of the month including December and not January, cost $150 (media included), there is access to the kitchen with no extra charge, the hospitality coordinator(s) and crew will make coffee and tea for $30, the management team will set-up/take down a few chairs/tables. The volunteer labour/commitment is minimal-medium.  The cost, provided there is no change by CSI, will be about $180/month or $1620/year.
Venue B: St Andrews Downtown 6th Av.  If the club opts to go to St. Andrews (rated for 150) meetings would occur on the first Thursday of the month, including December and excluding January, venue cost will be $100/month which provides access to kitchen, percolators/kettles/cups, the hospitality coordinator(s) and crew would make coffee and tea for $30, there is a microphone, speaker, and screen available for use along with a member donated digital projector all of which would need to be set-up, the management team would also put out chairs/tables so the volunteer labour/commitment is medium.  The cost is about $130/month or $1170/year. Picture of Hall and Kitchen below.
Venue C:  Hal Rogers in Aberdeen.  Hal Rogers (rated for 130) meetings occured on the last Thursday of the month, cost around $75 for venue (+250 deposit for insurance purposes), microphone, speaker, and screen would needed rented for $50-100 depending on quote/availability, volunteer commitment/labor was more than medium with the hospitality coordinators arranged, picked up/delivered coffee for $100/meeting and then returned urns [there was a kitchen available but no supplies (percolator/kettle/cups)], management members set up/took down table/chairs, obtained and setup/took down media equipment and returned to rental agency. The average cost of a meeting was $250 a month or approximately $2250/year or approximately 2/3rd of the base budget for 120 members at $30/month and 1/2 the base budget for 150 members at $30/month.

Summer is not obligatory. We can start an infernally hard jigsaw puzzle in June with the knowledge that, if there are enough rainy days, we may just finish it by Labor Day, but if not, there's no harm, no penalty. We may have better things to do.

Geocaching is an activity in that gets participants to use navigational techniques and a global positioning system to find caches (usually containers with items, logs, trackables, and assorted sundries) called "geocaches" at specific locations.  See https://www.geocaching.com.  On May 10th the geocaching interest group had their first field trip at MacArthur Island where the City of Kamloops has supported the MacArthur Island Treasure Hunt.  See map of route.....

Five Grassland Probus members attended the training session.
Here Isabel finds a cache aptly named 'Knot Here'.

There are many, many types of caches.  One form of cache is an EarthCache. These can be sites of cultural significance, history, geography, or natural phenomenon and are intended to enrich and educate.  On this trip we stopped at an EarthCache named Freshet wherein the history of flooding in Kamloops was the topic.  See picture of Rabbit Island.
Planning another field trip for later in June or possibly in the summer that takes us out of Kamloops.

Men's Book Club/Discussion Group

The Men's "Book Club" meets once a month to discuss weighty matters.  The organization is a little different in that instead of choosing a book for all to read, they decide on a topic and each member researches it to prepare for discussion.  Recent topics have included Artificial Intelligence, Louis Riel, and First Nations Representation on the Supreme court.  The next meeting is April 26 in the afternoon and the topic for discussion if Proportional Representation in British Columbia.  New members are welcome - contact Doug Bickley.

There is no glory in star or blossom till looked upon by a loving eye;
There is no fragrance in April breezes till breathed with joy as they wander by.
William C. Bryant, Poet, 1794-1878

When it Rains it Pours.
Now that the weather is improving it is evident that the seasonal activities of hiking, boating, birding, and biking are getting underway.  More folks are carrying binoculars to watch the wonder of birds, getting out in gardens, planning picnics or trips....   While the rainy weather might dampen one's activities and spirits, those who play bridge, games, get together for lunch/dinner, enjoy crafts, or read/discuss books weather the weather together.   Newer groups are sprouting:  dancing, listening to live music, and geocaching.
The Kamloops Grasslands Probus Club  (KGPC) has grown to 144 members with about 17 remaining on the wait list and is resolved to do membership renewal at the end of September.     The KGPC Club Activity Committee is busy with plans for a Prime Rib Dinner on April 25th, Lawn Bowling Lessons May 8th, a picnic at Paul Lake May 24th, and a possible trip to Salmon Arm in June (hold June 12th).  The Kamloops Probus Club has recently extended an invitation to members of the KGPC and the Thompson Rivers Probus Club (TRPC) to a mystery bus tour they scheduled for May 25th (See details below).

Next General Probus Meeting is April 26.  It is a joint meeting with the Kamloops Probus Club.  There will be NO business meeting at this time.  We look forward to hearing about Wells Gray Provincial Park and a social gathering after Roland Neave's presentation.

Given the relative newness of the Kamloops Grasslands Probus Club (began 2016) and the notion that management positions are two year terms, the management is planning/recommending we stagger start times for management positions to foster continuity and promote mentoring of the incoming management team.  Therefore, this fall the management nominating committee will be seeking volunteers to serve two year terms (2018-2020) for Secretary, Treasurer, Registrar, Hospitality Coordinator,  Speaker Coordinator, and Club Activity Coordinator, and Vice President (who then becomes President in 2019-2020, and Past President 2020-2021).  Position extended for an additional year:  Newsletter Editor (Val), Webmaster (Sean), Interest Group Coordinator (Jennifer).  Vice President Laurel Haywood-Farmer to become President in fall 2018 (a 1 year term), Cheryl Zawaduk to become Past President 2018-2019.

Coordinators: Please send in Activity Group Updates/Events/Stories for the monthly newsletter to Val Collins.

April: The Month
Romans gave April the latin name Aprilis[1] but its root is uncertain. The traditional etymology is from the verb aperire, "to open".  Several of the roman calendar months were named after divinities and Aprilis was originally Venus's month and may be derived from her Greek goddess name Aphrodite (Aphros). It is also suggested by Jacob Grimm 1785-1863 (Philologist and mythologist) that the month was named in honor of the hypothetical god or hero Aper or Aprus. (Taken from wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April).  In the original roman calendar April had 29 days.  Julius Ceaser added the 30th day.

May Probus Perspectives

story thumbnail
Probus Perspectives:  May 2018

In the marvellous month of May when all the buds were bursting, then in my heart did love arise. In the marvellous month of May when all the birds were singing, then did I reveal to my yearning and longing.
Heinrich Heine, Poet 1797-1856

Respice, Adspice, Prospice:  Look to the past, present, and future.

It is a busy time for Probus and I hope that members are enjoying all that Probus has to offer including  the events, the activities, fun and fellowship.  There is a growing demand for another Probus Club in Kamloops.  Sean McKenna, past president of Kamloops Grasslands Probus Club (KGPC) and Inga Thompson, past president of the Thompson Rivers Probus Club are looking to the future and organizing the formation of this new group.   At our MAY meeting (May 31st) there may be a few extra folks who are joining us to see what it might be like to be in a Probus club.
While we grow and change,  our place and the world around us changes. Our interests change, our needs change, our ability to engage in activities or commit to leadership changes.   One change that will have significant impact on us as a club is the renovations occurring at the Brock Activity Centre operated by the Kamloops Centre for Seniors Information (CSI). CSI will no longer operate the large venue that we have been fortunate to occupy for the past season.  May 31st will be the last time KGPC meet in the usual room.  The CSI is having to collapse their schedule for two rooms into one room and in doing so the KGPC usual last Thursday time will no longer be available.  The CSI is setting aside Tuesdays for community groups to book the venue.  KGPC has been offered the first Tuesday of the month.  Thus KGPC needs to consider accepting the offer to stay in Brock or source another venue that can accommodate our needs within our budget at the same day/week of the month.   A notice of motion from KGPC management will come forward at the May general meeting recommending a necessary change in meeting time and/or place.  The  KGPC management will explore additional options in terms of space, budget, media, and kitchen and finalize the notice of motion.

2018 Calendar
The upside of changing the KGPC meeting time to earlier in the month is management and members can get activities rolling earlier in the fall and wind up the general meetings earlier in June (2019). The challenge will be holding the AGM in early October....... this year management would need to wrap up registration at the end of September (which is when membership fees are due) and hold the AGM Oct 2nd (first Tuesday).  Membership registration renewal important in in preparing a budget for 2018/2019.  Some membership attrition can be anticipated every fall and new members are added throughout the fall as space is available.  Not all is predictable but a close guesstimate in budget is doable in time for AGM.   A change of KGPC general meeting dates earlier in the month offers the 2018-2019 management group an earlier start in the fall (Nov 6th/Tuesday rather than Nov 29th/Thursday and as such the club activities can begin earlier.  An earlier start also may provide more mentorship time from those outgoing management members.....some of whom are know to make a winter getaway starting in November (AKA Snowbirds).  An earlier management rollover allows for the new team to get going well before the Christmas/NewYears break.

Or/and KGPC members could consider a Notice of Motion to remove  Bylaw No. 5 - General Meetings Item 2  General meetings of the Club shall be held on the last Thursday of each month, with the exception of December, July, and August, at 10:00 am, at Brock Seniors Center, Kamloops and allow the management to determine place and time, in consultation with membership, as changes may arise from time to time.

GENERAL MEETING IN JUNE:  Additionally, as it is not feasible to meet the immediate Tuesday June 5th, five days after our May 31st meeting we will hold our last general meeting in June 28th at the Kamloops Yacht Club.

Magnetic Volunteers
It is looking good in terms of recruiting new management members for fall 2018, thank you to those individuals who have volunteered for two year terms as club Activiy Coordinator Hospitality Coordinator, Secretary, Speaker Coordinator, and Registrar.  KGPC management is still recruiting for a treasurer (2018-2020) and VP (VP 2018-2019, Pres 2019-2020, Past President 2020-2021)...so if interested please talk to a member of the management team.  Slate of candidates to be presented in September. Being on the management team is quite an enjoyable way to invest one's time.

The Month of May
Some say MAY was named for the Greek Goddess Maia, daughter of Atlas and mother of Hermes. Others claim MAY comes from the latin word maiores or “elders” and June comes from the latin juniores or “young people”.  In the late Russian Empire Mayovka was a picnic in the country or a park in early May.  Eta Aquariids is one meteor shower that appears in MAY and is associated with Halley’s comet.

MAY 31st is the 151st day of the year and our next Grasslands Probus general meeting.

Probus Perspectives March 2018: Rebirth

Posted by Cheryl Zawaduk on Mar 20, 2018

“It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold:
when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade.”
Charles Dickens, Great Expectations.

March Theme:  Rebirth
In Probus terms the occurrence of official spring in March conveys a time when energies can be renewed and the chance to participate in new and familiar activities comes around again.  New members are welcomed, some of our seasonal interests will be revived, and many will watch gardens and natural surroundings regenerate.  Some might even help give new life to gardens through planting.   The probus management team has begun to think about renewing and will begin to prepare the ground for new growth by inviting members to take on different leadership roles come the fall.  The current team will seek membership support of a one time extension to 3 years for a few of the management members to facilitate  ‘rebirth’  and mentorship of a 2018-2019 management team.  Congratulations to any members with new grandchildren or great grandchildren or new babies of any kind.  Enjoy!!!  The picture below is of a pysanka, or Ukrainian painted egg. The egg being a symbol of rebirth and fertility. Wishing you all the best of this new season along with the rebirth of hope that often comes with spring.   See you all at the Next General Probus Meeting March 29th.  Interest Group Coordinators are invited to stay after the March general meeting so members might have a chance to meet and talk about interest group focus and plans.
This ceramic pysanka was created by potter David Zawaduk.
Happy Birthday to all Probus Marchonians
March’s birthstone is aquamarine and bloodstone symbolizing courage and the March flower is a Narcissus, the national flower of Wales and a common symbol for cancer charities.  March comes from Martius, named after Mars the Roman god of War and was the first month of the earliest Roman calendar.  (Extrapolated from Wikipedia).  “People born in March are a surprising blend. This is because March marks the end of Pisces, i.e. the last zodiac sign and sees the beginning of Aries, i.e. the first zodiac sign. March born individuals have a unique personality and talents that set them apart from rest of the crowd. They know how to make the best of any situation and strive for success. They are always up for challenges. “ (taken from https://www.astrospeak.com/slides/8-surprising-personality-traits-of-march-born-individuals) They are said to be intuitive, generous, devoted, and enjoy quietude.

Probus Perspective February 2018:  Togetherness

February 2018.
Hola,

Theme for the month of February:  Togetherness…. a feeling of closeness or affection from being united with other people.

"Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much." --Helen Keller

Welcome to the newest members of the Kamloops Grasslands Probus Club this February.

In it Together!!!!
Coordinators are a key link to the overall success of the PROBUS club.  Your talents, enthusiasm, and communication with the PROBUS members and management team is very much appreciated.
At our last general meeting, while trying to recruit Coordinators, the importance of creating interest groups that increasingly become self-propelled was raised.  One definition of coordination is “the act of making all the people involved in a plan or activity work together in an organized way” Cambridge dictionary. Coordination of groups as teams can take the form of keeping the group going by involving members to take on different responsibilities so that the group can make the most enjoyment out of their collective skills and efforts.  As different members step up to take on varying roles, such as interest group coordination, consider how the group might perform as a team, in what ways can the work of activity planning/organizing be dispersed, whether or not a Co-coordinator would be helpful,  what are the most effective ways of setting up group guidelines,  would it benefit the group and its Coordinator for each member (or two members) toorganize/lead and communicate one activity/event annually, does the group name reflect its team and activity, etc, etc.  Each person in this club is a leader and we are in it together for the mutual benefit of self and others!      "If You Want To Go Fast, Go Alone. If You Want To Go Far, Go Together." – African Proverb.   Probus members are interconnected in many different ways and live complex lives that makes togetherness not always possible or desirable.  If one finds they are not able to join, participate, or facilitate an interest group or other activity in the moment..........there will come a time for everybody's purpose under Probus.  Together in spirit!
February 22: What's up?
Our Next General Meeting (get together),  is Thursday Feb 22nd, the 53rd day of the year or XXII.II.MMXVIII and 26 days until spring.  Feb 22nd is National Margarita Day and National Chilli Day.  February 22nd in Canada’s history 1825 - Britain and Russia set inland boundaries of Alaska/BC at first mountain range and 141st meridian  1924 - Long-distance telephone connection establish between Macleod, Alberta, and Toronto.

Happy Birthday Februarians.  Probus Members Born in February are associated with the flowers are violet, primrose, iris, and with the stone Amethyst. The urban dictionary describes a Februarian as an awesome person who’s birthday is in February, usually are the life of the party, and may be the most exciting person one will ever meet.

Past President & Webmaster Sean McKenna

Sean was born and raised in North Vancouver with two annoying little brothers.  After attending BCIT in Operations Management, he began his career working in automotive warehousing and distribution in 1976.  Always interested in cars and motorcycles, Sean built a 1973 Vega station wagon, which he traded for a motorcycle and later bought a 1975 Triumph TR6.
In 1979 a move to Winnipeg found Sean opening a warehouse as Warehouse manager and freezing his ears while walking backwards against the wind to the bus stop.  (Perhaps motorcycles and Triumph TR6's aren’t ideal winter vehicles.)  Undeterred, he moved to Edmonton as a salesman for the same automotive company.
By 1983 Sean was back in North Vancouver where he worked for Spilsbury Communications as Inventory control Manger.  This company built coast guard radios and the first car telephones.
1986 was a pivotal year, as Sean met Jennifer at Expo86.  They married the next year and settled in North Vancouver.  Son Michael was born in 1990 and daughter Sydney arrived in 1993.  Meanwhile Sean began working at Vancouver General Hospital as Stores Supervisor, and later moved to Lions Gate hospital as Stores Manager.
In 1995 the family moved to Kamloops where Sean started NRI Distribution with his brother Peter and partner Bruce Churchill.  He joined the Rotary Club of Kamloops Daybreak in 2003 and served as President in 2008-2009.  In addition to Rotary work, Sean was a co-founder of Developing World Connections and traveled with these organizations to Guatemala, Peru, Cambodia and Vietnam for humanitarian work.  He and Jennifer also went with eight others to India for a National Polio Immunization Day and three weeks of traveling in northern India.
Sean retired from NRI in 2010, but was kept busy from 2012 to 2017 caring for his mother.  He now plays with his dogs and his 1973 Triumph Spitfire and runs a used parts company called Totally Spitfire.  Of course Sean also took time out from these activities in 2016-2017 to be our founding president and to nurse the Kamloops Grasslands Probus Club through it's first year.  Having completed this task so successfully, Sean now shares the benefit of his experience by serving as our Past President.

Happy New Year and All the best in 2018

2018 is a new year and as such individuals often set personal goals or refine a bucket list. For the Kamloops Grasslands Probus Club the goals are simple: foster friendship while having fun and learning.  Some things to consider while goal setting/bucket list developing: Make plans for tomorrow, do something unexpected, try something new, make a new friend, reconnect with an ‘old’ friend, go somewhere you have never been before-be it local or global, try a new food, rejoice in our uniqueness, love the place you are in and the people you are with, gather valuable experiences and acquire more wisdom, do something to make a difference for yourself and others. Oh, and yes, if you are, or you can see yourself, volunteering to coordinate a Probus interest group, your good will and efforts are appreciated.   Your participation/commitment makes us all the better for it.    January 25th is our first meeting of 2018 and the date has wee bit of an Irish/Scottish link.  It is National Irish Coffee Day (https://www.flyingboatmuseum.com/irish-coffee-center/) and Bobby Burns Day.  Robert Burns penned Old Lang Syne, a traditional new year tune, in 1788 a rendition which can be heard and viewed on Youtube: https://youtu.be/pWK1AP1Jpco).  From January 25th meeting onwards there will be 340 days left in 2018, it will be the 36th day of Winter, there will be 54 days left until spring, and there will be 8 more Probus meetings on the last Thursday of the month with the exception of July, August, and Dec.  All the best of the new year to KGPC members.

As of October 31st, 2017 there were 239 active PROBUS Clubs in Canada with 34,354 members (http://www.probus.org/canada.htm).  Probus, besides being an organizational name, has meaning as an adjective:  good, serviceable, excellent, superior, able –or- upright, honest, virtuous (https://en.wiktionary. org/wiki/probus).  Now that (Probus) is an adjective to aspire to!   Our mission for 2017-2018:  fun, fellowship, food, and fitness (mental/physical/social/spiritual).
For the Kamloops Grasslands Probus Club (KGPC) there are 120 members.  Please welcome new members this November as several charter members opted not to renew. The waitlist for KGPC membership is now around 30 people.  KGPC members will be asked to support an increase in the membership to 150.  Can KGPC accommodate another 30 members? Much appreciation is extended to Av, Reg, and Judy for their contributions to the management of membership/registration (money, commitment, counting, registering, keeping people informed).  The management team used ClubRunner software to manage membership/registration and communication in general.  As we learn the system it is proving to be helpful to the management team.
The November General Meeting will include speaker Craig Jones, welcome to new members, a review of last 2016-2017 revenues/expenses and a proposed budget for 2017-2018, a notice of motion to increase membership to 150 members, and a chance to sign-up to interest groups or form a new interest group.

President's Preamble for October

Posted by Sean McKenna on Oct 15, 2017
As we close our first year as a Club, I have to thank the Management Group for their support and assistance. Without them we would not have had such a great start!
Thanks also to the Interest Group Coordinators for stepping up and making things happen yes.

We start our New Year November 1st with President Cheryl at the helm, and I know she will help us continue to grow and develop. Thanks to Cheryl for being my VP and covering for me when I could not attend meetings.

As I write this we are well underway with our Free Trial of our website. It is my hope that we can bring some value to those of us that need to communicate with the Club... The Interest Group Coordinators, the Club Activities folks, and the Management Group. This is a SOCIAL Club and should not be a burden on any of us that volunteer to help.
So.... watch for some new things and feel free to catch me at the meetings or call/email. I'm glad to help if you want to use some of the features of the website or have questions.
Cheers!
Sean

Interest Groups

Posted by Sean McKenna on Oct 10, 2017
The Interest Groups are really what PROBUS is all about. Yes we have 9 meetings a year with interesting speakers and camaraderie with friends... but it's the activities of the Interest Groups that can continue all year long. The KEYS to a successful Interest Group are Coordinators - someone willing to communicate an "event"... and this can easily be a shared responsibility... oops I said the R word.... relax! This is a social club! A few good people can bring together a group of like minded people for a shared interest, and a shared experience. Hopefully you joined with the hope of being active mentally, physically or both... and are looking to learn new things!
Be that person to step up and help an Interest Group work. We are here to help you. The new website will make it easier...
What Interest Groups do we have?

What is PROBUS?

Posted by Sean McKenna on Oct 04, 2017

PROBUS is an association of active retirees who join together in clubs.  Its basic purpose is to provide
its members with regular opportunities to keep their minds active, expand their interests and to
enjoy the fellowship of new friends.

If you are an active retiree, or no longer working full time, you may like to join a social club to enjoy friendship, fellowship and fun. PROBUS can offer a great avenue of interests and new horizons.

PROBUS meets the needs of retirees by providing opportunities to keep their minds active, expand their interests, stay healthy through activities, benefit from training programs, and network between like minded people and enjoy the fellowship of new friends.

PROBUS can provide members of the community with fresh ideas to enrich and fulfill their lives in retirement.
