San Diego County District 5 Supervisor, Jim Desmond visited Escondido After Five with an informative and entertaining program. Video of the program is attached. Thank you, Supervisor Desmond for your visit!
Rotary After Fivers ended this 2020/2021 year with a bang. During a pandemic year, that made it difficult to have our typical service projects as groups working together, we were still able to find ways to help our community and Youth. We started the year helping our Health Workers and School Nutrition Workers, then helped to build portable desks for students that were studying remotely. Finally, we funded a socially distanced end of year celebration for Del Lago Academy Scholars that stuck with their Zoom classes, worked despite distractions at home and passed their classes to graduate. We awarded fourteen scholarships to Valley High School and Del Lago Academy scholars.

Escondido After 5 is a 100% Paul Harris Fellow Club. Some of our members have multiple PHF's

Rotary After 5 had the opportunity to host Escondido Chief of Police Ed Varso at our May 5th meeting. He discussed how our Police Department maintains an efficient and effective operation despite challenges like Covid-19. See his presentation on the "program" section of our meeting video below.

Vietnam Veteran and Docent from USS Midway Museum gave Rotary After 5 a presentation on Combat Helicopter rescue mission.
Irv Erdos provided our second March program and brought his original brand of humor to our Spring meeting.
Our Past President, Al Owens provided us with an informative program regarding the use of force by police officers. This gave us some new insight into what our police officers face every day while they are working to protect our community. We were also visited by Lily, a Brownie that is trying to meet her goal of 525 Girl Scout cookie boxes sold. See the following video for additional details.

Our newest member Doug Paulson provided our program today and provided us some food for thought in finding ways to help our Youth.

Craig Needham, a founding partner with the firm Needham Kepner & Fish LLP. Born in Palo Alto, Craig graduated from Bellarmine College Prep, Santa Clara University, and Hastings College of the Law. After serving in the military, he worked for a plaintiff’s trial law firm in San Francisco for three years, before starting his own firm there, eventually moving his practice to San Jose.
Along the way, he has gathered numerous honors including induction into the American Board of Trial Advocates and being named Lawyer of the Year by an impressive number of organizations. He has been active in, and has often led, trial lawyers associations. He also has an active mediation practice.
Craig has shared his knowledge of the law in the classrooms at Hastings, Stanford, Golden Gate, USF, Santa Clara, and Lincoln Law Schools; and in lecture halls for continuing education programs all around the state.
A cycling enthusiast, Craig’s biking adventures have included a 4,200-mile ride across North America, a trek through the French and Italian Alps, and a 2,500-mile ride from El Paso, Texas to Jasper, Alberta, Canada; raising money in each for the Children’s Skin Disease Foundation. He also has completed 12 marathons and over 40 triathlons, five of which have been “iron-man,” and has participated in 50 consecutive Bay to Breakers in San Francisco.
Craig and his wife, Stephanie, have been married for more than 52 years; they have three children and six grandchildren.
Craig has spoken to numerous Rotary Clubs to thank the organization for its tremendous efforts to rid the world of polio. The mission is personal for Craig, as he shares the amazing and inspirational story of his mother, Jane Boyle Needham, who was diagnosed with polio at the age of 29 and who lived in an iron lung for 13 years.

During this challenging year, it has been difficult to meet with family and friends so Club Service Director, Carol Szytel, organized a virtual holiday party to remind us of the importance of family and friends. She is truly the heart and soul of the club and we can't wait for the time that we will be able to meet in person again. We wish you a very Happy Holiday Season and that 2021 find you Covid Free and bring you good health, joy and prosperity. Enjoy the following video as some of us reminisce of Christmas Past.
Governor Steve Weitzen visited us on Dec. 2nd and presented a very informative program on how Rotary is helping to combat human trafficking. It was an excellent follow-up to D.A. Summer Stephan's program in November. See the video for more details.
