Chrstmas LuminaryThe Itasca Lions are proud to continue the tradition of the Christmas Luminary, which in Itasca, was started back in 1960 by Boyd and Barbara Hindman. The tradition of candle lit bags lining the walkways and streets on Christmas Eve is symbolic of the “Lighting of the Christ Child’s way home”. Please light your candles at 5pm on Christmas Eve. (Rain date is Christmas Day.) Sand for your Luminary bags is available at Washington Park, 350 E Irving Park Road, in the corner of the parking lot in front of the Park District building. Additional bags and candles are available at the 7-11 store on Walnut or at the Itasca Park District, 350 E. Irving Park Road. |
About UsIn 1917, Melvin Jones, a Chicago business leader, told members of his local business club they should reach beyond business issues and address the betterment of their communities and the world. Jones' group, the Business Circle of Chicago, agreed.
After contacting similar groups around the United States, an organizational meeting was held on June 7, 1917, in Chicago, Illinois, USA. The new group took the name of one of the invited groups, the "Association of Lions Clubs," and a national convention was held in Dallas, Texas, USA in October of that year. A constitution, by-laws, objects and a code of ethics were approved.
