ABOUT THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM
We have all heard about the recent rise fo bullying in the US. The FBI has reported a substantial increase in hate crimes (verbal and physical abuse against minorities) spiking at the end of last year. Many of us have been a victim of or witnessed hateful speech directed at another because of race, gender, religion, ability. What can we do about those difficult situations when we encounter them? Anne Barton will speak about how to respond to everyday bigotry, de-escalate harassment and handling bullies nonviolently. Anne Barton is on the board of directors of the Peace Resource Center. The PRC was established in 1980 to provide a clearinghouse of peace and social justice resources, issues and activities. It has expanded to promote networking among peace-related organizations; to offer nonviolent alternatives in conflict resolution; and to carry on an expanding program of peace education in San Diego.
February is World Understanding Month (think peace, love and valentines) and Rotary is making a push for peace literacy this month. In honor of this, we have some great speakers lined up for February.
Feb 1: The Peace Resource Center of San Diego - How to Handle Hate
Feb 8: Hearts 4 Refugees - Refugees in San Diego
Feb 15: Rotarian Jerry Leggett - Rotarian Action Group for Peace and Peace Heroes Walks
Mark your calendars now! You are invited to the Hands of Peace 2017 San Diego Benefit Evening on Sunday March 5th at 5:30-8:30pm at the San Deigo Central Library. The Peace Heroes Walk Around the World is a joint initiative between the 21st Century Peace Literacy Foundation and the Dayton, Ohio Peace Museum. For the first time ever, the walk is being held here in San Diego and they're reaching out to us to be a part of it! In addition, they've changed the nature of the walk from a fundraiser to a FREE event! They are promoting Rotary's work in peace and Rotarian Action Group for Peace, and we are hoping for a big Rotary turnout at the event.
You can get involved in a number of ways including: starting your own team, sponsoring a team, donating to the event, or volunteering at the event. Bring all your friends and wear your Rotary t-shirt. This is a great way to promote Rotary and it's goal to foster peace locally and globally, and we hope you can participate!
