A great experience for the team from Cal Coast Academy, sponsored by our club, representing Indonesia for this year Model UN!
This year we sponsored a Model UN team from Cal Coast Academy for the event on April 7 & 8, 2018 at the Joan B Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice at USD.

Our team consisted of Alexandra (Alex) Hedrick and Alyssa Marie (Mari) Dick along with their very capable Advisor Mr. EJ Campbell.

The team attended the orientation on January 27th where they learned about what happens at the event and were given the two resolutions to be addressed.  One was Solutions for Ocean Pollution and the second was to discuss if the UN should recognize Palestine.
Then the moment all were waiting for:  the selection of the country we would represent.  This year we selected, from the hat, Indonesia.

For the next 3 months the team studied all about Indonesian history, culture and political positions on the  two resolutions.  Each team member selected a resolution and gave a 2 minute speech stating the Indonesian position.  Part of the fun of this weekend is to learn to make alliances, compromises, and negotiate solutions.

The event tops off with a gourmet dinner with all teams, family, friends, Rotarians and special guests.  This year’s keynote speaker was Kevin M. Kennedy, former UN Assistant Secretary-General, and Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for the Crisis in Syria.
