Leslie Favors (left) board member of the Monica Boyd Literacy Foundation presented an overview of the foundation's mission of providing free tutorials to improve reading skills in elementary students who are lagging in reading skills. Leslie told the story of local resident Monica Boyd and her difficulties completing her education due to insufficient reading skills and her goal to help as many youngsters as possible to overcome reading deficiencies at no cost to parents. Inviting Leslie to speak at the meeting was August program chairperson Scott Sheley (right) who complimented Leslie's story with data tying a lack of literacy skills to future troubles in the lives of those who never acquire a command of reading.
