Detective Aaron Crowell of the Baytown Police Department presented an update to Kiwanis on April 21 regarding the facts, dangers, and efforts to eliminate synthetic marijuana use in our community. Crowell is part of a task force designed to educate the public about the drug know on the streets as KUSH. Synthetic drugs are unregulated, untested, and highly potent. The use of synthetics increased nationwide over 169% from 2013 to 2014. In Baytown alone, police are reporting an average of three hospital admissions per day for reactions to the drug, which can be ingested through smoking or inhaling. Synthetic marijuana was made illegal in Texas on September 1, 2015, and BPD is working diligently to educate citizens about its dangers as well as tracking and prosecuting dealers and users.
