Stephanie Martinez, Outdoor Recreation Planner for the Texas Chenier Plain Refuge Complex located in Anahuac, was guest speaker at our February 16 meeting. Stephanie gave a broad overview of the refuge complex. Some of the activities available at the refuge, which hosts over 200,000 visitors annually, include wildlife monitoring, photography opportunities for bird watchers and naturalists, environmental education, and tours for groups of 15 or more. There is no admission charge to visit the complex, which includes two new visitor centers constructed after Hurricane Ike destroyed the former centers and wrecked havoc on the refuge. The mission of the Refuge is "Protect the Land." The refuge is open daily from 9:00am-4:00pm.
