The 2015-2016 Kiwanis year was another outstanding year for the Appleton Fox Cities Kiwanis service club and celebrated the year at their recognition breakfast on September 30th at Atlas Coffee Mill in Appleton.  The Appleton Fox Cities Kiwanis Club provided over 2,000 hours of service to the community during the Kiwanis calendar year.

Each year, the club has an opportunity to award the Tim DuVall Kiwanian of the Year Award to a member that has gone above and beyond what is asked. This year’s president, Renee Waterman, recognized Paul Shrode for this award. Shrode has been a part of the club since 1993.

The Kiwanis International Foundation established the Hixson Fellowship in 1983 to honor George F. Hixson, the first international president of Kiwanis International. Each year, the Appleton Fox Cities Hixson Fellowship awards this honor to a member of the club that has made a significant commitment to the Kiwanis effort. In recognition of service and dedication to the Kiwanis cause, the Appleton Fox Cities Kiwanis Club was proud to recognize and honor Dawn Malcolm and Sarah Long-Radloff as the newest members of the Appleton Fox Cities Kiwanis Hixson Fellowship.  Malcolm has been with the club since 2012 and Long-Radloff join the club in 2010.  Both award recipients have been active members of our club serving on various committees.

In recognition of Dawn and Sarah’s receipt of the George F. Hixson award, the Appleton Fox Cities Kiwanis Club has made a $1,000 contribution for each in award in their name to the Kiwanis International Foundation.  Those funds will be earmarked to fight Maternal Neonatal Tetanus in developing countries.

The club also took a moment to recognize a community member with the Robert P. Connelly Medal of Heroism.  This honor is awarded to an individual who has risked or given his or her life to save someone else. The medal has honored more than 600 individuals around the world, each of whom has exemplified the supreme sacrifice given by Connelly—who lost his life while trying to save a woman who had fallen in the path of an oncoming commuter train.

This year the Appleton Fox Cities Kiwanis Club recognized Andrew Maltbey of Appleton, who in May 2016 was one of two people who saw Officer Stephanie Wiener struggle with a suspect and was injured while assisting.  Mr. Maltbey was present this award in a private ceremony.

President Renee Waterman also announced some final financial support to Kiwanis-supported and community programs.  The club donated $300 to the AKtion Club of the Fox Cities, $200 to the Appleton North Key Club and $100 to the Fox River Revitalization Project.  In addition, our club will be donating two IPads to the IPads for Autism program.
