There were 30 members present today with Les Reinhart visiting from Action Club. Jack Williams was also a guest and is planning on joining Kiwanis. President Tim Christensen called the meeting to order with the old gavel and when questioned about the spare he declined to answer. Hollie reported that Team Maze still needs volunteers, you may sign up on line. Bill Raney reported that the Kiwanis Live Healthy Iowa team was solidly in 8th place and this week's winner was Denny Goshon. Denny was presented with chocolate, which he declined to share. President Christensen reminded us that we have a Board meeting this Friday.
Bill Steussy had the program today. He introduced Pam Mentzer with Greene County Public Health who works in the public health departments HOPES program. Her topic was about the recent rise in teen pregnancy in Greene County. According to Population Health Institute, at the University of Wisconsin, Greene County has the highest teen pregnancy rate per capita in Iowa. Many things factor into this problem. Good father figures are very important in a teenagers life. Who teenagers look up to is also part of the problem. Pam urged us to continue to be good mentors for young people in our county. Pam was very thankful for all the things Kiwanis do in the local community.
