There were 32 members in attendance today with visitors Ben Yoder, Jack Fredricksen, and Les Reinhart. Ben invited all members to attend the annual Chamber of Commerce meeting on Monday evening, January 27th. Birthdays and happy dollars were shared including the last $3 brought back from Hawaii by President Goshon!

Bill Stueussy had the program today. He introduced Denise Promes from GCMC who spoke to the club about preventing diabetes. Denise shared a powerpoint presentation that discussed some of the numbers associated with this "American Epidemic". There are approximately 26 million people with diabetes in America and another 79 million that have pre-diabetes. About 5,000 new cases are diagnosed every 24 hours! The cost of diabetes is estimated at $174 billion.

Early detection and treatment of diabetes can decrease the risk of developing the complications of diabetes. The following symptoms of diabetes are typical. However, some people with type 2 diabetes have symptoms so mild that they go unnoticed.

Common symptoms of diabetes:

  • Urinating often

  • Feeling very thirsty

  • Feeling very hungry - even though you are eating

  • Extreme fatigue

  • Blurry vision

  • Cuts/bruises that are slow to heal

  • Weight loss - even though you are eating more (type 1)

  • Tingling, pain, or numbness in the hands/feet (type 2)

Thanks to Denise and Bill for a very interesting and informative program!
