Our guest speaker today was Louise May of Aurora Farm, St. Norbert, Manitoba.
At Aurora Farm, they are actively learning and teaching sustainable agricultural principles through workshops, tours, volunteer and employment opportunities. They have dairy goats, heritage chickens, alpacas, horses, cows, rabbits, dogs and cats.
They shear their alpacas once a year and make yarns in the natural colors of the animal. They sell these yarns along with hand-knit, crocheted and woven warm-wear. They have a small herd of dairy goats from which they get milk and in turn produce cheese, butter, yogurt and ice cream. They make fine quality handmade soaps with their own goat milk, local oils and organic essential oils. The also make shampoos, gel-soap, moisturizers, deodorant, lip balm and toothpaste.
They have a small flock of heritage-breed hens that produce eggs for both them and some to spare for sale. They will also help you start your own backyard flock. Aurora Farm is home to a beautiful herd of horses. They own, lease and board horses. Many of their horses are used in lessons.
Aurora Farm is a member of WWOOF Canada, World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms. Individuals who want to get some hands on experience, receive room and board in exchange for labour. Aurora Farm has hosted people from all over the world.
You will find Aurora Farm products at their table at the St. Norbert Farmers Market.
