A 12 day program taking place at various locations in Winnipeg between September 13th and September 24th promoting September 21st’s World Peace Day was organized by various organizations under the auspices of Rotary District 5550’s “World Peace Partners”.
Organizations involved in Peace Days this year included
- Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre
- Winnipeg City Hall (for the Official flag raising)
- Canadian Museum for Human Rights
- Canadian Mennonite University
- University of Manitoba’s Mauro Centre
- Several High Schools (Kildonan East, Miles MacDonnell, and Maples Collegiates)
- St George’s Anglican Church and St Boniface Cathedral
- St Norbert Arts Centre
Following up on all this activity there will be a presentation by Steve Killelea (Australian IT entrepreneur and founder of the Institute for Economics and Peace). October 4 at 1:30 as Sol Kanee Lecture hosted by Mauro Centre in Buhler Hall at the CMHR and another event on October 19 from 7 to 9 PM at the Marpeck Room of Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) featuring the Winnipeg Police Service, the Bear Clan and Paul K. Chappell (Peace Leadership Director of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, an Iraq War veteran, West Point graduate, international speaker, and author of five books),
Anticipating that Rotary International’s next big goal after Polio Eradication will be achievement of World Peace, this effort by World Peace Partners is working towards achieving Rotary International Peace Centre recognition for Winnipeg (with a focus on Global Indigenous Studies in collaboration with four Winnipeg Universities led by the University of Manitoba and also involving the Canadian Museum for Human Rights).

- Rotary Elementary School Peace Walk at the Forks and CMHR (Canadian Museum for Human Rights)
- An origami art installation at the CMHR
- A multi-faith moment of meditation in the ruins of St Boniface Cathedral
- A celebration of the first year of a local initiative to build peace in South Sudan that took place at St George’s Anglican Church
- Kildonan East Collegiate and Miles MacDonnel High Schools own separate “Peace Day”
- Students from Grades 5 to 12 “Standing with Mother Earth” event in Whittier Park
- A Passport to Peace Gathering event at Maples Collegiate
- A public panel discussion on Canada and Peacekeeping held at Canadian Mennonite University
- A Peace Day concert at the St Norbert Arts Centre
- A Brown Bag Lecture by Mel Duncan (“Compassionate Rebel and co-creator of Non-Violent Peace Force”) at the University of Manitoba’s Mauro Centre. Mel Duncan also spoke at St Boniface Cathedral on Canada’s Role in Peacekeeping and at the Canadian Mennonite University on “Nonviolent Peace Force”.
