Rotary Moment

President Iain met a family from Ukraine at an Open House yesterday. They are not refugees, but immigrated 8 years ago and more recently chose Winnipeg to live. Iain shared some of their favourite places in the city, including the Leo Mol Sculpture Garden. They were surprised to learn he was from Ukraine. The moral of the story is that these actions don't need to be scripted. Promoting Rotary should happen naturally.

Chair announcements

Golf Tournament - Iain volunteered to take photos at the golf tournament. He showed photos of foursomes, sponsors, club volunteers and displays. Several drone photos showed off the golf club and illustrated how fortunate we were with the weather. The winning team shot -7, while Kristi's team from the Assiniboine Chamber was the most honest.

Wes Hazlitt - Nancy Hansen, Chair, Satellite Club is sad to report about the death of member Wes Hazlitt. Wes was an important member of the club. He spoke at one of our club meetings and was the first from the Satellite Club to receive his membership certificate. We remember his interesting presentation that evening. Paul Harris - President Iain was pleased to call forward Dave Morris to present him with a Paul Harris pin. Iain thanked Dave for his contribution to Rotary both financially and as a tireless volunteer. We're proud to have him and Nancy as members.

Bridge of Hope Ukraine - Mandy reported that she was interviewed by the Neighbours of Tuxedo magazine published in August. She read a letter of thanks from the editor. The story is on Facebook too, which can be shared. The committee has been on pause for the summer. The storage units are full, so September will be focused on furniture delivery. We continue to receive inquiries about furniture donations. September 23 is the next call for volunteers.

Myrna Driedger - will not seek reelection in the Fall, 2023. She thanked the community including our Rotary Club.

Jim Forestell introduced guest speakers Cameron Templeman & Hannah Johnson. Cameron is Jim's grandson and Hannah is his fiance (to be married in October). They are both involved in the film industry in Manitoba. People don't realize how important this sector is in the province.

Cameron has been in the industry since 2017. Graduate of film from the UM, and works with Film Fest MB, most often as a Film Director. Hannah grew up in the film industry in advance of university. She is employed by Eaglevision.

They provided an overview of the numerous organizations involved in film, including the unions in the US and Canada. The unions in the US are the ones currently on strike. The foundation of the current issues began in 2007/2008, beginning with writers. Actors joined the strike later.

The biggest impact was on network television. Today, streaming services are filling gaps, making it more difficult for the sector. What happens in the US, impacts Canada. In addition to compensation issues (including residuals), unions are also concerned with AI (replacing jobs and experience of writers and actors).

The need for unions is clear, given the attitudes of management/ owners. It is a profitable industry, with little to workers.

Manitoba has a strong film industry, with good incentives. The strike is causing some disruptions and projects on a holding pattern. The hope is that the sector can stabilize for the benefit of all involved and for the viewing public.

Club members were interested and asked lots of questions.

Happy Bucks

• Sharon - was happy that she took her granddaughters to Winkler and to Morden for the Corn & Apple Festival. And she'll never do it again! There were 50,000 people on the streets and the lineup for the free corn was blocks long.
• Jagdish - is very happy. His eye is 98% better and either his most recent injection, or the next one, should be his last.
• Cathy's sister (in Arborg) fell and broke her knee on Monday. The happy part is that she was brought to Grace Hospital by ambulance on Tuesday, had surgery the same day, started OT on Wednesday and got another ambulance ride home on Friday.
• Bob was happy to have his grandson, who is interested in the film industry, join him for tonight's meeting.
• Mandy enjoyed her family trip west with the kids. The challenge was that when they went on the zipline Anya's braking system malfunctioned and she went back again. They threw her a line, and everyone survived.
• Ed Thompson was happy to have had a visitor from Australia, who connected with him through the Rotary International Travellers' Club. The gentleman wanted to visit graveyards.
• Iain was happy to have had a visit with a lady from Burlington, because she bought a forest bag.

Sarge - issued a fine to himself and to Iain for making Anya wait so long for dinner. Lorraine did not draw the blue marble.

Next week - There is no meeting next Monday, Sept. 4 (Labour Day). On Sept. 11, members of the Rotaract Club UW will report on their activities.
