Our guest this evening is a colleague and friend, Gill has been involved in mediation for over 25 years. He has extensive experience in mediation, creating marriage separation agreements. He has achieved a Diploma in Conflict Resolution, a Certificate in Applied Counselling and Mediation in Marriage and Divorce Family Matters. Gill was a provincial constable for Alberta Justice Department. He has won the Attorney General Crime Prevention Award for Manitoba and was appointed by the Attorney General as Chairman of the Provincial Council on Youth Crime. He and his wife Dianne are long time real estate agents and when Iain said he was busy, he may have spoken out of turn.
Gill has been involved in mediation for almost 25 years. Before that he was for a time a bodyguard for Ralph Klein in Alberta. He wanted his career to be proactive vs. reactive. Mediation and Rotary are similar in that we work in the interests of all concerned and improve the community we live in. Pros and cons of mediation. Can be less expensive, still needs to be authorized by a lawyer. There's no regulatory body, so there are other checks and balances. Starting to see mediation used more and more in the legal system. Types of Mediation 1. Facilitated Settlement Mediation 2. Facilitated mediation 3. Transformative mediation and 4. Evaluative mediation. In all cases, the mediator is trying to get the best of all parties leading to resolution. Facilitated settlement and facilitative mediation has more ownership of the parties, with concessions. There were many questions and obvious interest in the topic. President Iain thanked Gill for the excellent presentation. |
