President Mandy Kwasnica was faced with a large turn-out for the meeting, but no lights for the venue. Power was out at Breezy Bend and remained out during the time we were all there, hoping to hear D.G. Elaine Thompson give her presentation. After a significant delay, President Mandy called on Dave Morris to lead us into O Canada to enable us to have an official meeting at least. No Rotary Grace tonight, as no food would be served. Sarge Mike Dudar was away this week, so we had Lyle Miller fill-in for him. S.A.A. introduced our guests for the evening: Dan Sutton (A.D.G.), Ernie Wiens (friend and past classmate, Aggie, of Ed Thompson), Jo-Anne Eilers (wife of Bob Eilers), Sharon Jasper (wife of Darvin Jasper), Janet Johnson (wife of Bill Johnson), Norine Miller (wife of Lyle Miller), Ryan Kwasnica (husband of President Mandy Kwasnica), Delia Ballon (prospective member & guest of Eira and Martin Labossiere).
ROTARY MOMENTS
Roh and Eira were asked to report on the Rotaract activities pertaining to the request, by Shamiso Hambira, to sponsor a Rotaract club. Eira Braun-Labossiere advised that a club already exists at U. of Manitoba. Shamiso and 4 or 5 friends want to get involved in Rotaract. They will have to check out the club and see if it is a fit for them regarding location, time, activities and goals. Gord Zacharias, Roh Goenka and Eira Braun-Labossiere will follow-up on this over time.
Jack Wilson advised that final planning for the ‘Guess Who`s Coming to Dinner’ will be taking place shortly. Assignments will be made this week. If you are interested in attending the event, please contact Jask ASAP. Dinner date is Oct. 27, 2018.
Jack Wilson advised that President Mandy, Jack and Roh Goenka met with staff from Westgrove School this week to get a wish list from them.
- Running shoes: contact has been made with Canadian Footwear for donations of runners for free or almost free.
- To have a sign showing Rotary involvement as well as business supporters for the `garden boxes`.
President Mandy reminded all of the Webinar being presented by Rotary on the topic of Rotary Grants. The deadline for signing up with President Mandy is Oct. 19th, 2018. There is no charge to take part. There is no limit as to the number that can take part in the Webinar. This is a very interesting program with a lot of information regarding Rotary, especially for the newer members.
October 24th, 2018 is World Polio Day. Our club board members want to contribute an additional $1000 above and beyond the regular funds donated. Jack Wilson and Dave Morris have gained permission to set up a table to collect empty bottles/cans at a local vendor. It is very cold outside now, so option would be to postpone this into the spring. Looking for a second date with a second business to do a similar bottle drive. Please advise Dave or Jack if you have any connections to assist with this.
Lorraine Forestell (away due to recent dental surg.) has two dates to remind all of:
- Nov.9th , 2018, the Assiniboine Rotary Club will be having a fundraising dinner at Breezy Bend C.C. Tickets will be $60 /pp and are available from Lorraine. A tax receipt for $28/pp will be issued. Please support this dinner as the Assiniboine club always supports our lobster dinner. The dinner will feature a chicken meal.
- Christmas party/dinner will take place at Breezy Bend on December 17th, 2018.
