Meeting Report
President Mandy opened the meeting with approximately 23 club members and one guest online with us. Nancy Morris rang an exotic bell from India that she had in her collection to start the meeting this week. President Mandy followed that with a video of the ‘Three Tenors’ singing O Canada at a Toronto Raptors home game. Wow! Nancy Morris suggested that we could try the ‘Log Rollers Waltz’ as an opening song in the future. Perhaps that should be reviewed prior to airing it!

Rotary Moments

President Mandy reported on the board meeting held just prior to the regular meeting tonight.
  • Membership dues will remain the same again this year. The dues have held constant for 3 years running now. The annual dues are $240.00 per member. Contact Dave Morris for payment options.
  • President Mandy encouraged members to donate to the Rotary International Foundation. The club must reach at least a minimum amount of donations to R.I. Foundation to be eligible for district grants in the future. Will investigate ability to place a link on the weekly meeting sign-up page for direct access to the R.I. Foundation donation page. You can allocate your donation to the area of focus that you wish your donation funds to be used.
  • Peter Tonge will prepare a presentation for the club on Rotary International Foundation giving. This is the what, where and how of R.I. Foundation donations.
  • The club has been approached by Cory at Breezy Bend asking if we would be willing to start having meetings back at Breezy Bend. Cory advised that they have arranged the main dining room (with large bar) to accommodate 27 dinners with extra tables. The tables would be appropriately distanced according to Manitoba Public Health Officer recommendations. There would be 6 place settings on the regular tables that previously were set for 8-10 guests dinning.
President Mandy asked for a show of hands in support of returning to Breezy Bend for regular meetings, at least on a trial basis. There was a strong vote in support.
Next week, June 8th will remain a Zoom meeting online.
Breezy Bend first trial meeting will be held on June 15th. Fellowship at 5:30pm, meeting starts at 5:45pm. There will be no handshaking or other direct contact. Masks are optional as per personal choice. Wash hands upon arrival and departure / or use hand sanitizer. Always keep physical distance.
There will be a couple members looking into the possibility of placing the Breezy Bend meeting up online via Zoom or some other app. The challenge is the Wi-Fi connection at Breezy Bend being strong / fast enough. We may be able to hard wire the camera into Breezy Bend router. Further information to follow.
Mike Dudar stated that we have to get back together at some point.
Ed Thompson is good with the plan. Ed advised that his doctor has placed him on a 2,000 unit dose of Vit. D as a preventative against Covid-19 infection initially. The doctor has now increased his dose to 4,000 units Vit. D.
Gord Zacharias suggested that we should keep Zoom production of meetings going long term.
  • President Mandy will hand over club presidency to Doug McKenzie on June 29th. Seating restrictions will remain in effect.
  • The $20 per dinner meeting fee was agreed to be set aside for donation to the club according to the number of meetings online attended. Please calculate the figure for yourself and consider a donation to the club’s R.C.C.C.F.. This is the Rotary Club of Charleswood Charitable Foundation. This is totally separate from the R.I. Foundation [mostly international projects as well as D.D.F. / District Grants). Full comparison to be presented in Peter Tonge’s presentation some time soon.
  • When you donate to the RCCCF, you can allocate the funds directly to any ongoing project that you wish. Tax receipt is issued. You are only supporting local, community projects through the RCCCF.
The best way to donate these funds to the RCCCF is to write a cheque to ‘R.C.C.C.F. Inc.’ and send to Ed Thompson. His mailing address is 787 HaneyR3R-0Y7.
  • R.I. Convention for 2020 is online from June 20th to June 26th. Look online at www.riconvention.org . Breakout sessions are scheduled to be part of the programming. The program is free, but it appears you must register.

Westgrove Food Hampers

Paul Brault reported on the Westgrove Family Centre hamper program. This Thursday there will be another hamper distribution. Paul and stakeholders will be forming a working group for the future of this program. The program will be called ‘Westgrove Children Nutrition Program’. Val has advised that 80% to 90% of the families receiving the hampers to this date have children in Westgrove School. The next dates of distribution will be June 11th and June 25th.

Val has an injury and may require some assistance next week. Funds for the program are in good standing. With the change over to the new program, the presence of additional Rotary helpers will keep the focus off Val and her family if some residents are not provided hampers as they were in the past. It is a ‘Working Group’ decision to change the program. The District Grant will help with funding into the summer.

Paul thanked all for the generosity directed towards the Westgrove family Centre during this difficult time for everyone.

Ed Thompson advised that $3,200 remains in the RCCCF designated for the Westgrove food hampers. Paul has $1,000 in receipts to submit against the Foundation balance.

Nancy Morris wondered if there were seniors in the Westgrove community that may require assistance. Paul responded that there are 35 hampers handed out each week. The program is working out well.

Omeid Deen – guest of Iain Scott

Omeid Deen is a member of the Rotary Club of Burlington North. The club has ~ 30 members. This is a new club for him that he joined about one month ago. Omeid originally joined the Rotary Club of Burlington Lakeside. The lunch meeting was difficult for him to attend while running a local small business.

He became aware of a program that was providing up to 10,000 meals a day for front line workers. As Rotarians we tend to ask, “what can we do?”.   Omeid’s answer was that he wrote a letter to the club president asking about providing meals to front line workers in Burlington. One of the Rotarians in this new club works in a hospital so he thought that it would be simple to get approval to supply meals into the facility. Well, administrators in hospitals are extremely strict about what is allowed into the hospital setting. The next thought was to provide the meal kits to front line workers in long-term care homes. He happened to have a friend that worked as the manager director of a long-term care home. Perfect! Two weeks ago, there was a plan developed to provide 200 individual snack kits for the home. Once all the Rotarians and their families got involved, there were 400 snack kits produced! They were able to donate ½ of the meals to another long-term care home for the front-line workers.

Last week there were another 400 meal / snack kits produced and given to the long-term care home staff. There seems to be a need for support of these forgotten front-line workers.

Q/A

Iain Scott asked what type of food was in the meal kits?
A.-Homemade sandwiches, muffins, cookies, cakes

Iain also wondered how this food was wrapped for safe transportation and acceptance at the consumer end.
A.-Zip lock bags, brown paper bags, regular everyday materials. Nothing special. Omeid’s wife “baked like crazy!”, his children were involved as well. He found this to be an important life lesson for his children. Some club members were working on this project with their grandchildren. Some even worked making meals with their families on Zoom while they worked together.
Note: Omeid introduced Iain to our club.
Keeping Up With ClubRunner
Glenn Campbell and Rod Delisle presented a visual presentation on how to use ClubRunner basics. Rod advised that we as a club have been using ClubRunner for about 15 years now. This is the primary Web presence for the Charleswood Rotary Club.

The club Main Page has links to the club Facebook, Instagram and Youtube pages. Also links to our District, Zone, Rotary International, ShelterBox Canada and IRCOM House.

The real power to ClubRunner is the beyond the Member Login. You must click Member Login- then enter your name and password, click submit. If not already, click on the “Admin” tab, the print is blue, and sections that you are not authorized to use are greyed out.

You can click under My ClubRunner  - Edit My Profile to Add a Photo, Change Email | Keep this information up to date as this is how R.I. keeps up to date. Inside this section if you click on Rotary you can see your Rotary Member #, Biography (you can select either Private or Public for this information). Click the Settings area and you can change your password.

You can also change your password by being on the Admin/Admin page, then look under the My ClubRunner list – click Change My Password. This will take you directly to the Member Profile | Settings | System Login – click  Change Password to the right side of page.

To see club member photos, Admin/Admin then find the My ClubRunner column, then click View Club Photo Directory. This will show new members photos of the club members; to assist them learning to put a name to a face.

Admin/Admin then ClubRunner column then click My Friends. This is where you can place a prospective member or friend First and Last name as well as their Email address. Then the Club Bulletin will be sent to them, with your name as the friend who sent it. This can generate interest in the club and membership. Please get their consent first!

Communication then click Email Services. A new window opens to allow sending emails to Rotarians listed in the Charleswood club member list. The club member list must remain up to date for these emails to reach the intended Rotarians. Next step to send an email is to click + Compose New Message. Then follow the Steps 1 thru 5.  In Step 1 you can select all club members or create a Custom List. Just click the ‘+’ and check the box next to the individuals that you wish to send the email to. When you have completed the email, you can test how it will look when sent by selecting to first send only to yourself by clicking Send to Myself in Step 5.  When satisfied with the email composition, click Send.

Glenn Campbell then continued the presentation. He stated that he is pleased to be involved in two committees for the coming year. First would be the club web page where he will be working with Rod to keep the page current and informative for club members as well as the visiting public. The second position that he accepted is to continue with the Youth Services committee, working with Iain Scott.

While discussing files that Nancy Morris found in her possession, Glenn and Nancy came to the same conclusion. They thought that it would be more efficient to use a dedicated location within ClubRunner to store and retrieve club documents.

Select My ClubRunner in the first horizontal line of options. Then click Documents (or “View Club Documents” on the Admin page). The list of available documents will appear in a column.

You may now open and read documents depending on your level of access. To open a file, click on the document title. Then, depending on your browser, a popup window may open, select Open or Save. Access to this area requires you to Login, it is a private area, not open to the public.

There is an option to select Volunteers along the top horizontal core sections. In this section you can click on View Signup Lists, then a new page will open to view projects available to volunteer for, or click on +Create New Signup List. New page opens and follow the input boxes. There are Email Templates available to use as well.

Communicate with Glenn or Rod when you have club documents to store, or photos for the Main Club Web page.

There is a module available for more options, also an Online Payment system. The problem with the payment system is that a % of donations is taken.

For more information, check out the videos on the ClubRunner Youtube Channel:

Q/A

Greg Fraser asked if you could word search in ClubRunner.
A.- Glenn stated the public website has an effective search function. Since the Bulletins are archived, the search results are often found in a Bulletin. Searching documents saved on the Admin side of ClubRunner is possible. There is a search box on the Documents page. However, it only searches file names not content.

President Mandy asked if you could store photos in ClubRunner.
A.-Rod advised that there is a whole other section that has that capability. However, there are other more effective photo hosting sites. A Link could be used.

Ed Thompson asked if this photo section is within ClubRunner.
A.-Rod advised the photo section is inside ClubRunner. The amount of space allowed is determined by the club size.

President Mandy expressed that this entire presentation was such a great way to train our members!

Glenn Campbell made a challenge to those that have not updated their Profile in some time. Upload a photo of yourself to your Profile page inside ClubRunner, before our next meeting.
Sarges Corner
Mike Dudar was online tonight to keep all in order.

Happy Bucks
  • Sarge Mike started the Happy Bucks off with acknowledging how absolutely beautiful the day was. Summer is actually here.
  • Nancy Morris opened her cellphone to find that it was her grandson Eli calling to tell her all about his day. He will be traveling to Florida as part of being a Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario [C.H.E.O.] kid. https://childrensmiraclenetwork.ca/the-children/?popup=cheo-foundation . Eli has been selected to help promote donating to The Children’s Miracle Network. Check out his story in the link above.
  • Dave Morris is happy to see beer bottles and cans being dropped off. Keep it up! The process of returning empties is much more simplified now with the relaxation of Covid-19 measures.
  • Chuck Crocker had a Happy Buck to celebrate a great weekend at the lake. He was working out there, no family present.
  • President Mandy was excited to have been able to open their cabin. They did have a big mirror in the bathroom fall over the winter. Great that the mirror did not break! Happy Buck. Somehow the sink below did…sad buck.
  • Dave Morris had to make note of the black bear in a tree at the end of the street on Pepperloaf Crescent. Happy Buck for the bear getting down and away safely.
  • Ed Thompson was happy to have the $200 from the government. The watering of his garden and yard is costing a fortune. Ed’s garden is full of various vegetables.
  • Gord Zacharias was delighted to have had his best golf score of the year.
  • Rod Delisle also reported a best score of the year. Only one game played so far! So, his score was also the worst of the year, and funny enough, the average!
  • Lloyd Talbot travelled to the Whiteshell. A great trip but very windy. He was almost all by himself in the region.
  • Elaine Thompson was cheerful to have played a game of tennis this year. She lost by four, but still worth a Happy Buck to get out there!

NOTE:
  1. Monday, June 8th will likely be our last Zoom only general meeting.
  2. Monday, June 15th will be our first trial general dinner meeting back at Breezy Bend.
Attempts will be made to have Cory from Breezy Bend appear online at our next Zoom meeting, June 8th.
