Rotary Moment
Who was Don Heriberto, AKA “Father of Rotary in South America.” On February 1st 1919, Rotary extended its reach to South America when the Rotary Club of Montevideo, Uruguay, was chartered. This first club was chartered thanks to the efforts of Herbert P. Coates. Coates, a native of England, had lived in South America for many years. He became acquainted with Rotary while on a business trip to Cincinnati where a Rotary convention was being held. He returned with approval to start a club. Coates returned to Montevideo and his work led to an organisational meeting in July 1918. That December, he and 21 other charter members submitted the club’s formal application to Rotary. Paul Harris described Coates as instrumental in spreading Rotary to and throughout the continent. Rotarians there referred to Coates, whom they called Don Heriberto, as the “Father of Rotary in South America.”

Chair announcements
The Assiniboine Forest Bags have been well received by all who have seen them. Iain has made approaches to two companies in Winnipeg to offer the bags through their retail store. He has found it a very easy conversation and encourages all members to engage with local businesses to market the bags.
During the past two weeks, Iain has been actively working on the artwork for the golf tournament. He showed off the flags he made up to help promote the forest during the tournament and later to help promote the bags in the forest. Warren has picked up the shirts and signs last week.
Nancy Hansen informs us from the Satellite club about an item related to their tab collecting initiatives. Michael Baker, Chair of the City of Winnipeg subcommittee, informed her that the subcommittee- diversity accessibility and inclusion gave them $500 to tabs for wheelchairs Manitoba.
Our neighbours at the Assiniboine Park had some lovely news. They are delighted to announce that the Johnston Family Seasonal Garden at The Leaf has been awarded the prestigious 2023 Landscape Design Award of Excellence for Public Gardens! The honour was received by Horticulture Supervisor Craig Gillespie during the Perennial Plant Association's National Symposium held in Niagara Falls, Ontario last month.
Nathaniel and Prabhnoor highlighted their experience as MUNA delegates and on the organizing committee for MUNA 2023. Our club was happy with the update and the opportunities for sponsorship and promotion for MUNA 2024. For more information, visit https://winnipegmuna.ca
Chuck was happy that after two weeks, and 8,701 km, he is back from Tampa and it is nice to be home.
Jagdish was happy for the good weather we are all enjoying.
Jack was happy to have had his two granddaughters from Calgary visit. One of them, Kaydance, joined our meeting.
Len enjoyed visits from two sisters, from Texas and Toronto. They went to the music festival at the International Peace Garden Camp where he learned to play cello saw.
Dave proudly reported that he was the first to sell a Forest Bag. To his doctor!
Elaine was happy about having a sister visit from Yellowknife.
Bob Foster (guest) was happy to be here. Bob was in the Winnipeg West club for 20 or 25 years, and then left. He rejoined his old club less than a year ago, and has already found himself its President Elect. He is visiting other clubs to learn how others run their meetings. Ed Thompson liked what Bob said.
