President Mandy Kwasnica was present to open the meeting and call upon Dave Morris to hit the opening note for O Canada and initiate the recital of Rotary Grace. She then handed the meeting off to Acting Sarge Darvin Jasper.

 

Sarge Mike Dudar was away tonight, so Darvin Jasper took over the position for the night. Darvin introduced our guests for the evening:  Kelly Clements and Dan Sutton.

 

 

Dan Sutton announced that as of next Wednesday March 6, 2019 his work phone number will not be the way to reach him…he will be retired!

 

Jack Wilson had a meeting with Westgrove School administration as well as the Charleswood Garden Club. The gardens will be replanted, Westgrove School is starting plants from seeds inside the school. They are discussing phase 2 of the raised garden plots. Westgrove plans on developing more outdoor activities for the next school year. The school will be celebrating Indigenous Day on June 21, 2019 with a BBQ at the school. Bob, Nancy, Lloyd, Dave have all been involved with this day in the past. There are many opportunities for more people to be involved this year. Watch for announcements for volunteers. There will also be an outdoor festival day next Friday at Westgrove School.

 

Jack Wilson also advised that further donations have been made to Westgrove school. These include 12 pair of runners in larger sizes for the older children to use, mitts, knitted mitts and scarves through a knitting club (Glenda Werbowski). Jack also mentioned that a meeting with Urban Stable will take place in April with the goal of doing additional work with the group.

 

Nancy Hansen has received a letter from Eric Farmer stating that the latest group of stamps has arrived. They have raised over $5,000 in the first ½ of this year with this stamp program. They hope to raise the same or more over the last half of the year. He realizes that this is a big ask, but it is good to have a target goal. This activity is operated through Rotary World Community Service.

 

Nancy Morris enjoyed her time at Westgrove School recently. They have been learning at school about the Indigenous history of the Charleswood area. While Nancy was at the school, she was approached by the young physical education teacher asking what Rotary is and what we do in Rotary, as well as what is polio?  In response to this, Nancy created a document that she can hand out explaining in a very concise way what Rotary is and what Rotary does. Also, on the second page of the document she goes into further detail about Polio eradication and why it is so critically important to finish the job of the eradication of Polio around the world. This document is available via email request to Nancy Morris.

 

Dave Morris passed the Polio Plus tin around and stated that the target is attainable if we remain committed to the cause.

 

Nancy Morris advised that Rotary stationary was found in the Morris basement. The stationary will be stored in the locker at Breezy Bend from now on.

Rod Delisle will be celebrating his birthday on Tuesday Feb. 26. He requested that we sing.

Glenn Campbell had a birthday a couple of weeks ago. He also requested that we sing.

 

 

Acting Sarge Darvin asked our guest Kelly Clements to pull the ticket for the 50/50 this week. She pulled # 604. Doug McKenzie finally held the matching stub. The problem was that the pot had been won last meeting, therefore the odds of winning were the absolute worst they could be. No win tonight for ME!

 

 

Nancy Morris fined herself for not making a reminder phone call to our guest speaker for tonight, as he forgot to come to the meeting.

Next week President Mandy will not be present as she is going to Tampa Bay with a girlfriend that is turning 40 years old. As part of the celebration, they will be attending the Tampa Bay Lightning play the Winnipeg Jets. Watch for them hanging the Canadian flag over the wall at the Jets dressing room. They will be dressed in Jets apparel near the flag.
