Meeting Report

President Mandy Kwasnica opened the meeting with the customary bell ring and welcomed all to the meeting. Dave Morris was once more asked to lead O Canada and Rotary Grace. The meeting was then handed off to the Sarge.

Sarge Mike Dudar was not present tonight, so Lyle Miller took over as Acting Sarge for the night. We had no guests to introduce tonight.

Rotary Moments

President Mandy advised the club regarding tonight’s board meeting;

Membership dues will remain the same at $240 (over 35 years of age, $150 under 35). Please note dues are to be sent in to Rotary International by the 2^nd week of July.
Christmas dinner date set for Dec. 16^th, 2019
Donation was made to STARS ($1,500.00) 2 weeks ago. President Mandy received a thank you letter from Andrea Robertson, President & CEO, in appreciation of the donation. Mandy read the letter to those present.
Fellowship evening sometime in September. There will be a ‘Goose Chase’ (download an App), a type of scavenger hunt, that will lead everyone to President Mandy’s home.
Require 2 or 3 individuals to volunteer to think of a remote meeting location/ tour & meal. Check with Nancy Morris before booking anything to make sure of no conflicts. Ensure accessibility and parking meet our needs to include all members. Iain Scott and Gord Zacharias volunteered.
Paul Harris submissions are due by October 31, 2019. Criteria to follow;

The July 8, 2019 meeting will be the start of our new Rotary year. President Mandy has been voted in by the Board for another year. President Mandy advised that she will have a new theme for the 2019/2020 Rotary Club year. Partners are especially welcomed for this meeting (always welcome at our meetings).

Jim Forestell reported on the fall golf tournament. In conjunction with the Assiniboine Rotary Club and Assiniboia Chamber of Commerce, the tournament will be on September 9^th, 2019 at Breezy Bend. Shotgun start at 12:30 pm. The cost will be $225 per golfer. This will include 18 holes of golf with a shared cart, a gift at the 1^st Tee, BBQ lunch, Prime Rib Dinner. Registration forms will be made available online (Martin Labossiere to complete this task).

Paul Harris Fellowship Recognition Policy

The Paul Harris Fellow recognition acknowledges individuals who contribute, or who have contributions made in their name, of US$1,000 to The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.

Rotarians have a tradition of supporting the Foundation by honoring others. Ida LeTulle Taylor became a Paul Harris Fellow in 1978 when her husband, then-District Governor Vann Taylor, made a donation in her name in honor of their 34th wedding anniversary. The gift also made her the 25,000th Paul Harris Fellow.

At the International Assembly in 1979, then-RI President-elect James Bomar challenged each Rotary club to make one non-Rotarian a Paul Harris Fellow. The Rotary Club of Pikesville, Maryland, USA, responded by making a donation in the name of Mother Teresa in 1980. The entertainer Pearl Bailey also became a Paul Harris Fellow through a joint effort of the Rotary clubs in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

Many other notable figures have been named as Paul Harris Fellows, including U.S. President Jimmy Carter, Russian President Boris Yeltsin, U.S. astronaut James Lovell, UN Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar, and Jonas Salk.

The Charleswood Rotary Club has made several club members and community leaders Paul Harris Fellows over the years. The following is a proposed policy for continuing this practice.

Policy for the Award of the Paul Harris Fellowship by the Rotary Club of Winnipeg-Charleswood.

The fellowship may be awarded to any deserving member of the community or the club; the awardee need not be a Rotarian.

The club should award at least two fellowships each year, based on the bank of points the club has in hand. Fellowships purchased by club members for themselves or relatives shall be counted separately from the two club awarded fellowships.

Each September the board shall call for nominations from the club members. These shall be examined by the board with selection(s) made not later than 15 November. Successful candidates should have demonstrated significant and selfless support to club or community endeavours in accord with Object of Rotary and RI’s current priorities; clearly demonstrating Service Above Self. In addition, the award should bring credit to the club.

Fellowship accoutrements shall be ordered by the Secretary so as to arrive before the annual Christmas party.

The Fellowship(s) shall be presented at the Christmas party by one of the club’s PDGs, with appropriate ceremony. non-club recipients shall be invited to the party along with a significant other at no expense to them. Along with the RI provided accoutrements non-club awardees will be given a properly framed copy of the presenter’s remarks as a keepsake.

An effort shall be made to have the presentation(s) recognized in local media after the event.

Rotary International Convention 2019

Ed and Elaine Thompson are still travelling. We attempted to present online videos from the convention. An issue with the bandwidth available during the meeting made this impossible except for very low-resolution short update videos. The keynote speakers’ videos were not playable. Nancy Morris advised that the video shows the far-reaching effect of our encouragement and peace activism in the world…Nancy Morris received this video link from David C. Newman with the following introduction;

This unacceptable risk to human existence I submit is by far the greatest threat facing us as humans. We owe it to our children and grandchildren to act now. I am part of a growing number of individual Rotarians leading the nuclear abolition cause. Let's spread the word. This video is a call to action by a world-renowned expert who just spoke to 20,000 Rotarians at the Rotary International Convention in Hamburg.

Happy Bucks

Ed Gramiak was very happy with his Alaska cruise. He described it as “successful”. Meaning he got back alive?? Or had a relaxing time??
Bob Antymniuk was happy with the play of the Roughriders even though there was no win at the end of the recent game. Issues with the Q.B. according to Bob.
Nancy Morris gave a happy $2 to the pot to recognize and celebrate the signing of the ‘Morris Twins’ Cooper & Cameron, with the Neepawa Natives Junior Hockey Club.
Rod Delisle had a successful walk in the I.G. Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer's held on June 13^th at Assiniboine Park. Rod raised $565 through his efforts. Dory works for I.G. Wealth Management, they had 300 employees present for the event.
Glenn Campbell was pleased with the way his “shack” in the Gatineau, Quebec area sold. The first individual to have a walk through made an offer – they countered – SOLD!
Roh Goenka had a Sad / Happy Buck tonight. Roh advised that this will be his second last Rotary meeting. He has quit his job and is moving on to a new phase in his life. Not exactly sure what that will be, but he is happy!
Janet Spence was happy to have participated in the ALS Society of Manitoba Walk to End ALS – Winnipeg Saturday June 15, 2019. She is also happy to be enjoying 2 weeks of vacation time.
Brian Campbell had $2 for the H.B. pot tonight all to celebrate time with the grand kids. Special mention for his 13-year-old granddaughter at the Zoo as well as 4 grandkids over for supper.
President Mandy Kwasnica was at the Manulife District Conference where she shared stories about her work in Rotary and what the Charleswood Rotary Club is active in. Manulife awarded $500 to Charleswood Rotary through Mandy, to support her volunteer work in Rotary. In the round table discussions her name was associated with ‘humanitarian work’.
Lloyd Talbot was happy to be departing for the Habitat for Humanity Cycle of Hope ride in 2 weeks time. The ride will start in Baker City, Oregon and conclude this year in West Yellowstone, Montana (July 6, to 20, 2019). The final ride into Winnipeg will conclude at a home on Selkirk Ave. being built for an Eritrean family. Lloyd handed out donation forms. Donations remain welcomed.
Martin Labossiere had an anniversary last week. He and Eira spent time in Clear Lake where they golfed and had an excellent time. Must have been a good time as “Eira has not left me yet”.
Eira Braun-Labossiere stated that she feels very honoured to be his wife.

John Inglis paid a late fine (to President Mandy), before leaving early… unfortunate as Sarge was going to call a “No fines tonight” decision.
