ROTARY MOMENT

Acting President Iain was dismayed to read that a young adult in New York has become the first US resident in nearly a decade to contract polio, state health officials say. Once feared across the nation, the disease was largely eradicated by a national vaccination campaign that began in 1955, The US was declared polio free by 1979. This development shows again why Rotary should continue its work to eradicate polio worldwide and why we as a club and Rotarians should continue to support the Polio Plus program.

  As some of you are aware Darv is very ill in the hospital struggling with a transformation of CMML cancer to a very aggressive form called AML. I am having some difficulty communicating with all the people we know are concerned for us. So Paula has created a blog site where the family can post information and updates. If you wish, you can sign up to receive notifications when she makes a post. While the site is a non profit free service we are aware that there is an opportunity to donate. Please disregard this. This is one of the best communication tools that we could find. We are so grateful for all the gestures of support and kindness. • Annual Dues - Members are reminded to pay your dues as soon as possible. If you have any questions, contact Dave Morris. His number is on the notice sent to you by mail or email. Thank you to those who have already paid.
• Satellite Club - The Board of Directors will meet next on August 2. The Board will approve updated bylaws, club constitution, committee structure and budget. We will also vote to support a proposal from Nancy Hansen to establishment a new Satellite Club of the Rotary Club of Winnipeg-Charleswood. President Glenn and Ed Thompson, Membership Chair are supporting the proposal and believe that the satellite club will be beneficial in many ways, including the obvious immediate benefit of adding 11 new members to our club. The satellite club will give us the diversity that we crave and will add positively to our club's profile. Satellite clubs are promoted by RI and District 5550 as a way to build memberships and service work. Further details will be circulated to everyone following the Board meeting.
• Bread Tags for Wheelchairs - the Rotary Club of Winnipeg-Charleswood now collects bread tags that can be collected and sold to recyclers to raise funds for wheelchairs. Contact Nancy Hansen, hansnan60@hotmail.com for more information about options for collection/delivery.
• RYLA - The District is seeking drivers and chaperones for RYLA. There are various options on August 1, 6 for the first RYLA camp and Aug 8 and 13th for the second RYLA camp. Contact President Glenn for more information at rglenncampbell@gmail.com
• Chase the Ace – Peter Tonge won the weekly draw again on Thursday. He turned the King of Hearts. We are now in week #36 of the 2nd series with a pot of $2500 when someone turns the Ace of Spades.
• Club Bulletin - Cathy Skene has joined Glenn Campbell as scribes on the bulletin committee. They will experiment with a shorter version and look forward to your feedback. Ideally, they would like to have 2 more volunteers, so that the job can be shared. Talk to Cathy or Glenn if you’d like to help or if you have questions.
• Assiniboine Forest - Jack Wilson reported that construction on signage at the Chalfont parking lot will begin in early September. We’ll be posting a sign and informing the public online. A pamphlet will be printed as well.
