Our unique strengths

We are all aware of how important the work of Rotary members throughout the world. Whether it be the eradication of Polio, the assistance of overseas flood and earthquake victims, supporting the education of residents of Guatemala by building schools.

Our own club in Charleswood with its active membership supports many local and international initiatives including Assiniboine Forest, Lobsterfest, Bridge of Hope Ukraine, Westgrove School breakfast program and garden boxes, Green Spaces Golf Tournament, Urban Stables, Scholarships for local schools, Shelterbox, MUNA, RYLA, the Ripple Effect, Stars Air ambulance to name a few.

Ahead of us is an exciting year with a full slate of projects. Let's celebrate together our unique strengths which help make our community and beyond a better place for those who live there.

Club Announcements

Board Meeting October 3rd.

Cathy distributed a signup schedule for forest volunteers to talk about the changes to the forest and fundraising including bag sales. Thank you to everyone who has signed up. Training was carried out last week for the forest website. If you require a copy of the Zoom recording, please reach out to Glenn.

Before tonight's meeting, a few members were shown how to download the square app and learn how to use the square app on their phones for the forest and club meetings. We have square devices for both. The square reader for meetings will stay here at Breezy Bend. President Iain printed instructions for members and will happily send a PDF version to anyone who needs it.

The Xmas party is on December 18th.

Jack reminded members about visiting the Assiniboine Forest website. He asked questions about the Forest, with answers available on the site.

There has been lots of discussion and we ourselves had a presentation of ChatGPT. It is now up to date with its results whereas before it showed data up to to 2021. Does it have a softer side and can it write a joke? President Iain asked it to write a Billy Connoly Joke…It replied…"I've always wanted to go to Switzerland to see what the army does with those wee red knives."

Our guests this evening were from ADM Storage Inc., a company that President Iain and Caroline use for storage in their clean and well organised facility.

Founded in 2002 and established in Oak Bluff since 2009, ADM Storage Inc was born from a simple idea: providing independent contractors with a reliable space to store equipment and materials. Today, they are Manitoba's leading supplier of containers.

ADM Storage, specialises in both onsite and offsite shipping container storage rentals and sales. They have an extensive inventory and supply to diverse groups of industries from movie sets to greenhouses, laboratories to public washrooms. They collaborate with partners like the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, City of Winnipeg, and the northern communities.

Mario Constantino spoke about his personal passion with gardening and landscaping. He built a home, gardens/facilities, lake (stocked with koi) and social areas for hosting customers and family at the site of ADM Storage on McGillivray. Mario was born in Italy and raised on a farm east of Rome. He learned many practical skills that helped him in Canada. He shares his plants and vegetables and often gives back to the community. He urged Rotarians to drop by ADM for a visit.

David Maitland spoke about the history of ADM, which offers a wide variety of storage solutions. The company became a specialist in container storage and modifying containers for specialized purposes. Several were placed in the Assiniboine Forest for use by the Green Team.

ADM customers are loyal and often stop to talk and to have Winnipeg's best cappuccino. Staff are like family.

President Iain personally thanked Mario Constantino for his generosity in bringing plants to this evening’s meeting. He has also shown that same generosity to Caroline and Iain, with the gift of a grape vine and fig tree. He has an oasis created on the property on McGillvary which will astound all.

The Club welcomed guests David Soper, Carell Jackimiek, Caroline Wild, and our guest speakers Mario Constantino and David Maitland (accompanied by some family members).

Happy Bucks

• Chuck was happy because of the good weather. People are still golfing.
• Cathy was happy that there was a Rotary meeting tonight, because on her way out she spotted an ambulance trying to make a pick up at the vacant IOOF hall, and was able to direct them to the correct place.
• Jim was happy about a great day, with good weather, at Patricia Beach for their grandson's wedding.
• David (guest) was happy to be here.
• Iain was happy that his daughter is visiting for the week
• Paul was sad. He had a text from his buddy asking him to go fishing, but Paul had a Rotary meeting. The buddy just texted that he is really reeling them in!
• Glenn was happy that Doug has agreed to do the bulletin while Glenn is in Greece for three weeks.

Next week there is no meeting on the 9th. On October 16th, our guest speaker is Lealand Muller who competed in the Invictus games.
