Meeting Report
The meeting tonight was set to take place in the large formal event hall at Breezy Bend. President Mandy Kwasnica had 4 full tables of Rotarians and guests tonight. Dave Morris got us started with O Canada which was followed by a moment of silent thought for each to give thanks in their own way. Sarge Mike Dudar introduced our guests for the evening – Carolyn and John Coffin.

Rotary Moments

Paul Brault advised that ~75 people have purchased tickets for the Christmas dinner to take place next week Monday, Dec. 16th, 2019 here at Breezy Bend. There will be fellowship with cocktails and appetizers starting at 5:30pm. The dinner to follow. There will be no gift exchange this year. Please make a donation to the Westgrove breakfast program or socks for Siloam Mission. Westgrove breakfast program items: Wow butter, cereal, granola bars (nut free), jam, fruit cups, apple sauce, Nutri-grain bars, puddings, juice boxes.

President Mandy is working on her video presentation that she plans on showing at the Christmas dinner event. She is focused on the club’s highlights from the past year. Of interest is that the Charleswood R.C. has a budget of $37,000 for service projects over this past year.

Ed Toews was manning the Salvation Army Kettle in Grant Park Mall this past Saturday and noticed that young people were a large demographic of donation contributors. The R.C. of Charleswood will be manning the kettle in Grant Park Mall for the next two Saturdays from 10:00 am to 6:00pm. As of Monday night the 4:00 to 6:00 slots are open for Saturday Dec. 14th and 21st. Please contact Ed Toews if you can assist filling these slots or could be available as a short notice spare.

Al Roberts advised that the application period is open for funding support for the Assiniboine Forest ‘Green Team’. He understands that the prospects for funding approval is less this year due to government constraints. The R.C. of Charleswood is usually having to supplement the ‘Green Team’ with ~ $500 to $800 /yr. There was general consensus to go ahead with the application for funding assistance again this year.

Lloyd Talbot made note that Eva Vida is organizing a webinar for Global Grants to take place on Jan. 20th, 2020. Please contact Lloyd to register as part of the Charleswood group or directly through Robert Durston via email previously sent out on Dec. 08, 2019.

Nancy Hansen has forwarded stamps collected by the 1st Baptist Church ladies to the final destination in Australia. Nancy will be making a donation in kind to thank the ladies for the donation.

President Mandy had a very sad news item to convey tonight. For those not yet aware, Rotarian Boyd Halls passed on Tuesday Dec. 3rd, 2019. Sincere condolences to Helen and family from the entire Rotary family.

Rotarian Boyd Halls Remembrances

Jack Wilson started by advising that he knew Boyd for ~38 years. In their younger years they were neighbours and Kinsmen together as well. Boyd was a guy that never wanted to be late for anything, especially a Kinsman meeting held on Thursday nights. They would drive to the meeting together then return home by 10:00pm. If one would say “come on in for a while”, well… a bottle of rye whiskey would be consumed well into the night/morning with lots of talk. They would then get a short sleep at home, then off to work for Friday!

Lyle Miller knew Boyd from back in the Thompson days. The year would be 1977, Boyd was a little older than Jack and Lyle but had a great friendship all those years. Boyd built a building for him in those years, seemed to always be around! They all travelled in the Kinsmen circles. They also all travelled in the business circles. As stated, always around! When Lyle moved south from Thompson, both Jack and Boyd were Rotarians in the Charleswood Rotary Club. That is why he joined this Rotary Club and not the Selkirk Club, which would have been closer for him. Boyd was always a good guy to be around. He liked his new cars. Actually has a new BMW in his garage right now. Lyle was impressed with Boyd’s understanding of business. A good quote from Boyd to remember, “there is only one thing that replaces money and that’s money!”.

Ed Gramiak knew Boyd through Rotary. Whenever they would arrange to golf together, Boyd wanted to start early. They would get 9 holes in then head off to IHOP for breakfast. Loved the routine of it.

Ed Thompson can remember having the pleasure of being able to share rides in Boyd’s 4-person golf cart when getting together for golf in the Phoenix area. Of interest is that Boyd’s wife, Helen, is related to Ed Thompson’s grade 2 teacher.

Ed Toews thinks of ice-cream when he thinks of Boyd Halls. When at Rotary, Boyd could be heard asking if there is ice-cream to go with desert. (DGM, I think we have ALL heard him ask that question!). Special arrangements were made tonight to have apple pie with vanilla ice-cream in honour of Boyd. We all enjoyed the dessert and thought of Boyd while we consumed the ice-cream.

President Mandy knew Boyd from Rotary. She always found him to be very welcoming. She thought very highly of him in the short time period that they had been friends.

Your Health: The Gift That Keeps on Giving
Presented by Carolyn Coffin

Nancy Morris introduced our guest speaker tonight. Carolyn Coffin specializes in helping people feel as vibrant and energetic as possible. She graduated with a Bachelor of Kinesiology from McMaster University (2000) and Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from Queen’s University (2003). She worked as a physiotherapist in clinics and hospitals for a decade before realizing that the only thing she loves more than helping people regain their health after an injury or illness is preventing them from becoming sick and injured in the first place. Since 2012, Carolyn has operated her own preventative health coaching practice – Eat Real Food Academy – centered around real food, lifestyle modifications and a focused mindset.

An avid and accomplished long-distance runner, Carolyn operates Eat Real Food Academy from wherever she happens to live with her military spouse (Johnny) and two children (Trevor 12 and Elyse 10).

Carolyn opened her presentation by talking about her own personal story. She had a health scare in the Fall of 2011. It was as if inflammation had gone wild in her body. Her wrists hurt as well as her shoulders. Her thumbs started to hurt next. Her ankles and knees were also sore. Then one day she woke to a swollen joint in her finger. This made her believe she had rheumatoid arthritis. She went to her doctor and had a referral to a rheumatologist. The wait for the booked appointment would be 6 months. Carolyn decided to learn all she could about inflammation while waiting to see the specialist. Through her studies of the topic, she came to the conclusion that her diet could be involved in causing her symptoms.  If you over consume sugar in your diet the body will respond by increase of insulin production. This causes stress to the pancreas and this will cause an increase in inflammation.

Carolyn decided to change her diet. She changed to a diet of all whole foods. By the time she went to her specialist appointment she had been 4 months into her whole foods diet. All her joint pain had gone away. Carolyn didn’t feel like her body was out of control. She had never felt like that in the past 33 years of her life. When she told the doctor about this correlation, the specialist said that there was no link between the two. Just one big coincidence.

Our bodies are constantly telling us what it wants. We just have to listen. It is difficult to live our best life if we don’t have our health. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Carolyn is passionate about prevention. Carolyn looks upon herself as a human detective. Her job is to shine a light on the problem areas.

We are able to change our mindset as far as diet composition is concerned.
  • Update your identity- stop using terms like ‘I’m not allowed to eat that’, ‘My doctor said I shouldn’t eat that’. We are working against our built-in wiring. It is easier to run if you believe that you are a runner.
  • Mindset – some people ‘love’ salad, others ‘hate’ salad. Work on changing the mindset.
  • No clear vision – you need to have a strong goal. Be confident and have a sense of where you are going.
  • Clear strategy – take some time to plan. ‘failure to plan is planning to fail’. New skills may be required.
  • Disconnected from our bodies – You need to listen to your body. Eat slow enough to realize when you are full. Only eat if you are truly hungry. Don’t eat just because the clock says it is time to eat.

Important Take Aways – (consider these in January, after the Holidays!).
  • eat when hungry (rate hunger 0 – 10) …stop eating when satisfied
  • get most of your nutrients from whole foods, clean protein, high nutrient density, healthy fats.
  • only eat foods that your body tolerates. If you have foods that your G.I. reacts to – don’t eat those foods!
  • eat foods you enjoy
  • enjoy the heck out of the foods you may eat that are outside of these guidelines

Q/A

1.- Chuck Crocker asked if spicy foods cause inflammation.
A.- Not as a generality. Read the label to see if any ingredients are reactive to you.

2.- Darvin Jasper asked for Carolyn’s opinion of the ‘Keto diet’. (carbs restricted to less than 50 grams/day)
A.- If done well it can be helpful for starting a diet for weight loss.

Bob Eilers thanked Carolyn for her presentation. She was advised that a donation to ShelterBox would be made in her name.
Sarges Corner
Sarge Mike Dudar kept all in order tonight.

Happy Bucks

  • Dave Morris was happy to have watched the local CTV News cast that showed a familiar face from Rotary “take down a crook”. John Inglis was the star in the lead segment of the Winnipeg CTV 6:00 News.
  • John Inglis had a few Happy Bucks to put in the pot tonight. The first was to recognize that local crime watch groups actually work. It was through the quick group notifications of a stranger in the neighbourhood that John became aware of the threat to his property. John’s second H.B. was that the crook in this case was about his size but a little younger. The crook got ‘older’ that night when he was pulled out of John’s SUV while being advised that he was “under arrest!”.
  • Lloyd Talbot was happy and proud of the work this past summer done by Habitat for Humanity with the Cycle of Hope trip that raised $140,000. This money has helped to have a Key Ceremony for an Eritrean family to officially receive their new home on Selkirk Ave. possible. Next year the ride will be from Yellowstone to S.E. Colorado. Hoping that Olenka will be able to ride the 2020 route.
  • Darvin Jasper had two Happy Buck events this week. The first was that they attended the Bison Men’s Club Medieval Dinner event and won 1st prize in the fundraising. The prize was 20 bottles of wine…really good wine! The second was an event that his grandson was the chairman of the organizing committee for at his high school. They hosted young school kids from the North East schools of Winnipeg. 100 children attended and were entertained and provided with an enjoyable day that included two stuffed toys each. Each and every stuffed toy was sanitized by Darvin and Sharon.
  • Ed Thompson woke to a very cold day today and was happy about the situation. The only thing he could think of was, “those poor suckers that have to go to work today”.
  • Jack Wilson was happy to get notice, from Canad Inns Polo Park, that the final tally from the District 5550 Convention held there this year was in. The event resulted in the Charleswood Club, as host club, was entitled to 15,075 hotel points. This is enough to allow for a weekend trip to Fargo or similar. A possible auction item for LobsterFest.
  • Lyle Miller was surprised to see that 3 vehicles had gone through the ice at Balsam Bay. He was very happy that his truck was not one of them.
  • Nancy Hansen is pleased and proud that Peter is featured in the picture posted on the barricades at Portage and Main. All in promotion of the Cerebral Palsy Stationary Bike Race March 14, 2020.
  • Chuck Crocker is just back from 5 wonderful days in Phoenix. He is happier that he made it across the parking lot tonight without falling due to all the pebbled ice.
  • Brian Campbell felt gifted that he was able to spend time with his 9-year-old grand daughter at a breakfast with Santa event. This was a Red River College Celebration. After that she was very happy to help with putting up Brian and Janet’s Christmas tree.

50/50

Sarge Mike asked Carolyn Coffin to draw the ticket tonight. She presented # 257 to be the one to match. It took a moment for Ed Thompson to realize that he held the potential winning ticket tonight. The odds of winning this evening were very poor as all marbles were back in the bag after a win last week. Ed gave it a try, however no win tonight.

This is the last meeting of the R.C. of Winnipeg - Charleswood for 2019. Next week will be the Christmas/Holiday dinner on Monday Dec. 16th at Breezy Bend. Fellowship, cocktails and appetizers begin at 5:30 pm.
