President Glenn began the meeting with the customary Land Acknowledgment and the singing of O Canada, (led by Dave Morris). Sarge Mike Dudar introduced guests David and Myra Bennet, Neepawa Rotary Club. Rotary Moment President Glenn used his Rotary Moment to welcome Darvin Jasper who joined the meeting by Zoom from his hospital bed. Glenn spoke about the website where news about Darvin is updated by his family. There were 2 recent requests, one for suggestions for the best root beer milkshakes in Winnipeg. The other was to encourage all to donate blood and plasma. Darvin gave everyone a thumbs up and spoke later in the meeting about the superb care at HSC. He thanked the club for its support and that he was blessed to have wonderful friends and a loving family. He is happy to have visitors, but is limited to one at a time. CHAIR ANNOUNCEMENTS New Member Induction - Ed Thompson, Chair, Membership Committee inducted our newest club member, Greg Wiens. He presented Greg with a membership certificate, member pin and his name tag. Congratulations Greg!
Fellowship Meeting - Members are encouraged to mark their calendars for the fellowship evening on Monday, August 29 at the Charleswood Historical Society Museum. Please invite spouses and significant others. There is space for 60 people and start time is 5 pm. Tickets are $20 per person. Members of the society will be in attendance to host the event and provide information about their archives including Charleswood Council meeting minutes from 1914 and old photos of the Charleswood business and residential areas. After dinner, there will be tours in another area of the museum which has displays including assortment of tools and utensils used by Charleswood pioneers, a display from the Kyper site (now Assiniboine landing) that go back 3500-5000 years. There are displays that hold Ken Van Roon's WWII memorabilia. Assiniboine Forest - Congratulations to the Assiniboine Forest Committee for being included in the grants awarded by Manitoba Trails. Last Friday, Jack Wilson, represented at a media event involving the provincial government, Manitoba Trails and other groups benefiting from the grants. Congratulations to those involved from the club! Chase the Ace - Chuck Crocker won $50 in the draw last week. The Ace of Spades is still waiting to be turned. We are now in week #39 in the second (and final) round of Chase the Ace. Spread the word about the opportunity to support the club and win a guaranteed pot of $2,500 RYLA - Wendy Hales hosted a student from Nunavut and drove her from Clear Lake to catch her flight home. The student enjoyed her RYLA experience. Thanks to Wendy for taking the time to host and drive. Guest Speaker - Nancy Morris came forward to introduce Dave Bennet, who spoke about Rotary Friendship Exchange. Dave is an active Rotarian, a member of the club in Neepawa, MB. He spoke about the RFE program, and the responsibility for hosts/ applicants and sponsors. The District is completing a survey to determine the interest in hosting.
