President Mandy Kwasnica opened the meeting with a loud call to order from her table mate, Mark Labossiere. It seems the club bell was missing tonight. We roared through O Canada and Rotary Grace, with Dave Morris` assistance. The meeting was then handed over to our stand-in Sarge for the night, Lyle Miller. Sarge Lyle introduced our guests; Perry Maric (guest of Paul Brault/Catherine Moltzan), Art Oakes (Assiniboia Rotarian), Eloise Lyon (wife of Glenn Campbell).

ROTARY MOMENTS

President Mandy advised that there will not be a meeting next week, October 8^th, 2018….Thanksgiving.

D.G. Elaine Thompson will be making her official club visit on October 15^th, 2018. There will be a club board meeting @ 4:00pm, prior to the dinner meeting @ 5:30pm. D.G. Elaine will be the speaker at that meeting and it’s a partner’s night.

World Polio Day is October 24^th, 2018. The goal to mark the day would be to raise $1000, to be increased by matching funds. Dave Morris and Jack Wilson approached the local beer vendor to ask if we could set up a table outside the vendor to collect bottle donations for the cause. The owner seemed open to the idea. Oak Park has done this before for one of its causes. October 27^th, 2018 has been suggested as a date for the bottle collection. A second way to reach the $1000 goal in addition to the bottle collection would be to ask each Charleswood Rotarian to donate ~$25 to the Rotary Club of Charleswood Charitable Foundation (R.C.C.C.F.). A charitable tax donation receipt would be given.

Mark Labossiere advised that the Charleswood R.C. Facebook page will have notice of the bottle collection for Polio Day as well as the cash donation to RCCCF, like & share to your page. Cash would be given to the Rotarian and the member would turn cash into RCCCF, then tax receipt given back to donor through Rotarian.

Jack Wilson passed around a sign-up sheet for this year`s Guess Who`s Coming to Dinner. The selected date at this point in time is October 27th, 2018. Please contact Jack to indicate if you want to attend and /or host. This is a casual event. Please indicate if you would be able to bring appetizers, dish for meal, salads, desserts.

President Mandy questioned those in attendance what date would be best for the Christmas banquet. Options put forth were Dec. 10^th or Dec. 17^th. The vast majority selected December 17^th, 2018. Lorraine Forestell will contact Breezy Bend to see if the hall can be booked.

Lorraine Forestell reminded all present, that the Assiniboine Rotary Club will be having a fundraising dinner at Breezy Bend C.C. on November 9th, 2018. Tickets will be $60 /pp and should be available from Lorraine shortly. A Tax Receipt for $28/pp will be issued. Please support this dinner as the Assiniboine club always supports our lobster dinner. The dinner will feature a chicken-based meal.

Jim Forestell was looking for an existing sponsor thank-you letter for use regarding the 2019 district conference. Rod Delisle and Jack Wilson both indicated that they had letters from the lobster dinner event.

LEED House Construction

Perry Maric and Paul Brault gave a presentation about what measures were taken to construct the Brault/Moltzan home. This is a Gold LEED certified home built by Maric Homes but could have easily have been a Platinum level if it was situated inside the city giving access to city services. Every effort was done to get materials from local sources, or at least transported by the most environmentally favorable way. This was true for the wall studs, finish maple, windows, Tyndall stone, custom cabinetry etc. Paul has a binder at least 4” thick of all the invoices for the home. They accounted for all material down to counting nails.

The home has ~ 2,200sq.ft. on the main floor with almost the same on the finished lower level with walk-out. The concept for the home came from a book published by an architect in the Minneapolis area. Many of the features pictured in the very large lakeside home, have been used as guides for this house. There is a fair bit of Frank Lloyd Wright influence in both the model home and this finished home by design. Three featured ceiling lights were based on this original.

The home is heated with mainly in-floor heating from a 7,500 linear foot geo-thermal coiled tube system in the back yard. These coils are buried ~7.5 feet below grade. The monthly natural gas bill is ~ $3.00 (+ $14 Basic Charge). Summer A/C must be done using conventional means. Windows are placed to get the most out of thermal heating as well as a lack of windows along walls that would tend to be cold in the winter. Thermal window coverings are also present – set on timers. The floor coverings are all hard surfaces for long term durability.

The house is so air tight that an air exchange is mandatory. This includes a heat exchange system as well. The plumbing in the home is all situated in one area so that the hot water pipe runs from the tank (in the lower level) is never more than 15 feet. The walls are made with 6” studs with an additional 2” of ridged foam on the outside before the exterior finish was applied. This made it necessary to build-out each window and door casing with a custom 2” extension. The way that the finish carpentry was done actually makes the thicker walls look appealing due to the standard reveal line incorporated with the 2” extension.

Catherine and Paul provided coffee as well as dessert plates for an enjoyable finish to the evening. The tour was greatly appreciated by all that attended.

Happy Bucks

Roh Goenka has quick to his feet to give the first H.B. for the evening. Hockey season has started. A round of applause for that one!

Rod Delisle had a great time at Amazin’ Corn on Saturday night, in the corn maze and other attractions. Said it was a fun event.

Glenn Campbell had a great time on a three-week vacation to Italy with his wife, Eloise. When in the Milan area they spent time with a past Rotary Exchange student. Eventually their travels took them to the world-famous Amalfi coast. Once more they met a past Rotary Exchange student and spent a week with him.

Brian Campbell was pleased to see that a gift given to their granddaughter 2 weeks ago is still being played with. She calls it her ‘drone’. It must be a hit of a gift if still being played with 2 weeks later!

Jim Forestell had a sad / happy buck this week. Sad that camping season is over, but happy that the trailer is winterized and no personal injuries or damage to property took place during the close down operations.

Mark Labossiere stepped up to offer a happy buck for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, since Bob Antymnuik was not present to get the accolades in. Mark also had a happy buck for our own Blue Bombers to celebrate a 2-game winning streak.

50/50

Our guest, Eloise, pulled the potential winning ticket stub. # 076 was pulled. Janet Spence held the match. This was now down to a 50-50 chance of getting the blue marble…….winner! Janet gets the cash and we start over fresh at the next scheduled meeting.
