President Glenn opened the meeting with a land acknowledgment. David Morris led the group in the singing of O Canada.

Rotary Moment - President Glenn read an interview with Katey Halliday, who serves on Rotary's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Task Force. She was asked to explain why diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are so important. Katey said above all, because it's the right thing to do. Diversity, equity, and inclusion is not a political issue; it's a responsibility we have to each other and to our communities. We all have the right to be treated with dignity and respect, to have equal opportunities for fellowship and service, and to be given the same platforms for our voices to be heard. As an organization that's both global and grassroots, Rotary has to lead the way.

Bill Johnson's funeral - Dave Morris reported that there was a good turnout of Rotarians at Bill's funeral. There was a very large turnout overall. Bill's Rotary membership certificate was proudly on display. Keep Janet and family in your thoughts.

Jo-Anne Dalton, president of the Rotary Club of South Eastman, in Steinbach, is going to help take the mystery out of Club leadership and give us some practical tools to step to the podium as a conductor of a Rotary 'orchestra' - even if we aren't quite sure if we can read the music yet. RYLA 2022 Day 7: The Building Blocks of Leadership The District RYLA committee is holding a session with RYLA alumni from 2022. It's being held on Feb. 17 and 18. RYLA CAMP 2023 The committee is in the planning stages for RYLA 2023. The dates this year will be: July 31 to August 5- Junior Week 2022 August 7 to August 12- Senior Week 2022

President Glenn had the pleasure of having coffee with Greg Fraser on the weekend. Greg received a Paul Harris Fellowship, his third. Greg is busy care giving, but is enjoying time with family and tending a big property. He keeps up with club news and is happy to help when he can.

Nancy Morris introduced our guest speaker Jo-Anne Jones.

Jo-Anne was born in Manitoba but received her teacher training and BSc from the University of Saskatchewan. After graduation she left to teach in New South Wales Australia where she met her husband and three children were born. In 1990 they returned to Winnipeg.

She is currently President of the Manitoba Chapter of the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association. Her hearing loss began in her early forties and is probably heredity. She retired a year early because at the time she was working in retail and the inability to hear on the phone made it too difficult to maintain her position even with hearing aids. She inquired about support groups at the Transcona Centre for seniors and was sent to take a course on coping with hearing loss taught by certified speech reading instructors trained by CHHA. That led to her starting the Transcona support group, joining CHHA-MB and becoming a member of the board. Her passion for teaching lead her to take speech reading levels one and two classes so she could help others find coping strategies through classes, presentations and support groups. For unlike glasses that can restore 20/20 vision, hearing aids help but cannot correct the damage done to the ear.

The mission of the MB Chapter of the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association is connecting Canadians impacted by hearing loss through advocacy, education and community engagement. 59% of Canadians have tinnitus, hearing loss or hearing loss and tinnitus. With hearing loss, the vowels are usually heard well, but the consonants at the beginnings and ends of words are missing. Hearing loss can impact you psychologically or physically. The Chapter offers support groups and presents at health and wellness events and as requested. During COVID, the chapter provided examples of clear masks, info on their availability, and tip sheets on reducing communication difficulties while wearing masks. They provided advice on accessing closed captioning in Zoom meetings and more. The Chapter advocates for cochlear implants which need to be replaced every 10 years at the cost of $10,000. Hearing aids are not covered by MB Health over the age of 18. They also advocate for loop systems to be installed in settings where a large number of people can benefit from a superior listening experience. Jo-Anne invited Kristy Tarasoff to speak about the club's role in refurbishing used hearing aids for individuals who can't afford them. We would use income criteria to qualify individuals. She showed a mock-up of the collection boxes that would be placed in senior's homes, funeral homes and some retail settings (e.g. Princess Auto has offered).

Happy Bucks

• Nancy was happy to have had a phone call from Becky McGregor, a former Rotary Exchange student.
• Chuck was happy that the Flyers were good (and the Jets not so much)
• Cathy was happy that Prairie Strides (formerly Manitoba Riding for the Disabled) is able to bring back its Flea Market this year.
• Mandy was happy to have attended her children's very first band concert. Both play clarinet.
• Glenn (who also played clarinet in school) was happy that his curling team won its first game of the season, by 5 points!
• Chuck was also happy to have watched his granddaughter play Moana in her school production.
• Jack was happy to have had his granddaughters visit from Calgary. While here they enjoyed the Aviation Museum, WAG, and The Leaf. And now Jack is happy that they have gone home.

Birthdays: Joanne's birthday is today, Bob's tomorrow, so we sang (badly again) to both of them.

The Draw - Sarge Jack asked Jo-Anne to draw the 50/50 ticket, owned by Rod. Rod did not pull the blue marble, so the 50/50 game continues. Jack did not issue any fines.
