Youth Night - President Iain began by speaking about club support of youth and young adults including the Ed Werbowski Memorial Scholarships and Adventure in Citizenship, held annually in Ottawa. She highlighted her activities at Oak Park High School including as a peer tutor, school council and school newspaper. In the fall she will attend the University of Alberta in Edmonton where she received direct entry and a scholarship and will pursue a major in business and project management while keeping her options open. She looks forward to continuing community service and was honoured to be chosen by Oak Park for the Rotary scholarship. Holden Zemlak – St Paul’s high school, just completed grade 11. He was chosen by the Charleswood Rotary Club to attend the Adventure in Citizenship program in Ottawa in early May. Holden stayed at residence at the University of Ottawa. He made many friends from across Canada. He even found personal connections with some (they say it’s a small world). Holden highlighted the AIC program including the War Museum, Parliament, Canadian Museum of History and a new citizenship program. There were many excellent presentations/ speakers. He thank you to the club for the sponsorship. Owen Broadhurst – very grateful for the scholarship and being chosen by St. Paul’s high school. He highlighted his school involvement including a human rights committee, student newspaper, a variety of sports, and a group of grade 12 students who do charity work. This past year, they raised over $25,000. He will be attending the University of Ottawa with studies in criminology, with the possibility of pursuing criminal law, justice or the RCMP. Kori Spott – recent graduate of Shaftesbury High School, and very active in student council, sports, charitable fundraising and Chaired the Mental Health Committee during COVID. Kori lived in a variety of locations as an ‘military brat’ which gave her an appreciation for different perspectives and needs. She thanked the club for the scholarship and was excited when she heard her name called at convocation. She will attend Queens University in Health Sciences, which includes time at Bader College in England during her first year. Her long term goals is to help others with a medical degree and a Medical Officer with the Royal Canadian Airforce (and possibly Aerospace medicine). President Iain thanked the students and wished them well with their studies. He hopes they return to Winnipeg to work. Cathy Skene offered additional thanks on behalf of the club, remarking how impressed she is with this generation. |
