President Glenn began the meeting with the customary Land Acknowledgment and the singing of O Canada, (led by Dave Morris). Rotary Moment President Glenn used his Rotary Moment to speak about the latest report about Darvin Jasper from his family. They want him stable enough to return home. Despite his difficulties, Darvin maintains a sense of humour and he cherishes the support of family and friends. His Rotary meeting on Zoom was a highlight. CHAIR ANNOUNCEMENTS: Members and guests are encouraged to attend the fellowship evening on Monday, August 29 at the Charleswood Historical Society. There is space for 60 and start time is 5 pm. Tickets are $20 per person. Lorraine will send the registration email as soon as possible. It will include more information about the address and the program. Assiniboine Forest – Jack Wilson recognized those who are serving as ambassadors at the Forest. The committee is advising visitors about upcoming changes to signage and the entry from the Chalfont parking lot. We are also collecting feedback. District Meeting – President Glenn participated in a District Zoom meeting last week involving Club Presidents. There was a presentation by Jenna Raimbault about the District’s new public image committee and its action plan. The committee will provide clubs with resources not currently available. More to come. Bridge of Hope Ukraine Project – Project lead Mandy reported that a summary of activities was circulated to the project committee. The focus continues to be Dima and family who are in Poland waiting for approvals. Efforts through elected officials has been somewhat helpful, but slow. An immigration lawyer is seeking approval for ‘foil-less’ visas to speed up the process. Further fundraising may be required, given the accumulated cost of living. Meeting Invite - Dave Ronson, President St.Vital/St.Boniface Rotary club wrote to highlight an upcoming meeting on Tuesday, September 27. The club meets at Canad Inn Windsor Park at 5:30pm. Supper is available through the hotel. Roddy Mackenzie is the guest speaker. He has written a book about his father’s life in the Bomber Command. It will be out in December, and it is called “Bomber Command, Churchill’s Greatest hour”. Members interested may contact Dave at 204-451-6056 or ronsonds11@gmail.com. Chase the Ace – Cathy Skene won $74 in the draw last week. The Ace of Spades is still waiting to be turned. We are now in week #40 in the second round and final series of Chase the Ace. Spread the word about the opportunity to support the club and win a guaranteed pot of $2,500. Guest Speakers – Cathy Skene spoke about the Ed Werbowski Memorial Scholarship awarded by the club to graduates of the high schools in Charleswood. She introduced 2022 recipients: Kathleen (Kate) Sawyer, Oak Park High School, Jennie Oh, Shaftesbury High School and Yazan Abusaleh, St. Paul’s High School. Each student thanked the club and spoke about their future education/ career plans. Good luck to all!! |
