Meeting Report

President Glenn called the meeting to order with the land acknowledgement and the singing of O’Canada

Rotary Moment –President Glenn read a bit of history about Breezy Bend Golf Club and Rotary (submitted by Iain Scott). On the family property in Headingley, John (Jack) McMahon designed and built Breezy Bend Golf Course, which opened in 1960. After that, he designed three other golf courses, Bel Acres, Winnipeg Canoe Club (modifications) and Spy Hill, SK. Jack was active in the business community and was a member of the Winnipeg Rotary Club, President of the Club in 1956 and Rotary District Governor in 1973.

The Sarge introduced guest spouses Caroline (Iain) and Eloise (Glenn).

Club Business Announcements:

Lobsterfest – Jim Forestell will report later after the finances are confirmed. President Glenn spoke about the positive feedback about Lobsterfest and how logistics presented some challenges, but solutions found. Congratulations to all.

Golf Tournament – now that we wrapped up a successful Lobsterfest, we need to focus our energy on our ‘Green Spaces’ golf tournament Thursday, August 17 at Bel Acres Golf Club. The tournament is being planned by our club and the Rotary Club of Winnipeg Assiniboine. It is important that members play a role by recruiting a foursome. If you can’t find a team, individuals can register and be placed on a team. If you don’t golf, we need volunteers the day of the event. There is an early bird date for registration, so take the time soon to contact friends and family who may be interested in a day on the course in support of the club, with proceeds to the Assiniboine Forest.

Jeff Merry - has been added to our Winnipeg-Charleswood Rotary Club as a Satellite Club member. He was previously a member of Winnipeg West Rotary Club. Welcome to Jeff.

An update on Ed Gramiak: He has health issues that required surgery. Thankfully, he was quickly referred for surgery. Ed is in our thoughts.

Doug – President Glenn touched base with Doug who replied:  ‘I am pleased to advise that my overall health has improved over the past month or so  I am still working on increasing my leg and core strength specifically as well as overall stamina. My R lung remains a little uncomfortable with a deep breath. This is to be expected at this time...as long as it seems to be improving over time I can accept this at this time. So, the summary of my current condition is... improving strength and stamina. I believe this will be my status for some time to go. I am increasing my out of house activities most days and believe my return to Rotary is eminent. Thx for checking in! Doug’. This news was met with a nice round of applause.

Mandy - The next furniture drive will be confirmed later. The private storage facility and CMU are both FULL, so there is no need to donate at this time. Mandy reported that we delivered furniture and household items to 120 families to date bridgeofhopeukraine.com.

Young Rotarian seeking support from Rotary – the downtown Rotary club circulated an email from a young Rotarian from Colorado who is seeking a place to stay and volunteer work in Winnipeg. President Glenn offered to email the information to members the following day (done).

Satellite Club – Nancy Hansen spoke about recent activities, new member Jeff Merry and literacy projects. Follow the club on its Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/SatelliteClubWinnipegCharleswood

Changeover Meeting

Outgoing President Glenn spoke about his decision to join the Charleswood club following a move from Ottawa, where he had been a Rotarian for 19 years. He was impressed by the Club’s activities, membership and meeting venue. It didn’t take long to become involved despite an intention to be ‘less busy’. During his term as President, the club formed the Bridge of Hope Ukraine Committee under the leadership of Mandy Kwasnica. The club was supportive and it has shown wonderful results. The Assiniboine Forest is another example of club success. He spoke about the public’s love of the Forest and the support of our club’s stewardship. He thanked Jack Wilson for his tireless leadership. The past year has also seen the club return post pandemic to in person meetings almost every week. Nancy Morris and her program committee have done well securing a wide variety of interesting guest speakers. The new Satellite Club has been another notable development, led by Nancy Hansen, with club liaison Peter Tonge. The club increases our membership and diversity.

President Glenn thanked all members some of whom work behind the scenes and to those who say yes when we need help. He gave special thanks to the club’s Board and Executive Committee. He is excited about the coming years, with Iain Scott, incoming President and President Elect Cathy Skene. Both are highly respected in the club.

Pin Presentation – incoming President Iain Scott presented Glenn with a special pin, thanked him for his service. President Iain took the podium and spoke about the challenge ahead for the club. He called for a combined effort to help in our growth strategy.

Sarges Corner

Happy Bucks

  • Jim was happy that Lobsterfest went well, and also happy that no one got sick.
  • Rod was happy about many things. He was in a Rotary golf tournament and won a $100 gift card from Go Manitoba. He also raced in the Pain in the Assiniboine cycle and canoe race and came in second!
  • Bob was happy that his first grandson convocated from UW on Saturday. One down, five to go!
  • Mandy was happy to have been at the lake on the weekend, and is very happy to see her kids take on her and Ryan's love of water sports.
  • Sharon asked if anyone knew where the collection pot used for 50/50 draw tickets came from. No one knew. Sharon told us that she and Darv brought it back from a trip to Egypt.
  • Ed Toews was sad to have lost their 13 year old lab, but happy that they now have a new puppy. He is also happy to have (almost) recovered from the illness that kept him from working at Lobsterfest this year.
  • Lyle was happy to have gotten a large poplar cut down in his yard, and his only injury was a finger. And the finger was not broken which really made him happy.
  • Al was happy to have enjoyed a lobster dinner even though he wasn't able to help with the work.
  • Len reported that when he raced in Pain in the Assiniboine he did not come in second. He came in last! He was also happy to have had 4 Kindergarten classes from Dieppe school visit the museum today, and very happy that his 101 year old dad was able to serve as their guide.
  • Cathy was happy that the forest decals were a hit, even though her friend thought they were drink coasters.

Sarge – outgoing president Glenn was given a mulligan for forgetting to call Sarge to introduce guests and for Happy Bucks. President Iain had the lucky 50/50 ticket but was not able to find the blue marble.

Upcoming meeting – there is no meeting on Monday, July 3. The next meeting is Monday, July 10. Guest speaker is Reg Sims, Grant’s Old Mill.
