UMEarth
We are the University of Manitoba Global Engineering Brigades (UMGEB), a project team operating within UMEarth, focused on sustainable development through clean water systems. UMEarth is a dynamic engineering student group dedicated to sustainability, providing students with opportunities to engage in design competitions, consulting projects, and local initiatives. Established in 2014, UMEarth fosters skills and connections to prepare students for successful careers.
In collaboration with Global Brigades, our team completed two impactful projects in Honduras in February 2024:
- Montana Verde: Designed and built a hydraulic ram pump system, delivering water to the community by pumping it 50 meters uphill.
- El Bailadero: Conducted a detailed survey and system analysis to enhance water distribution to homes, ensuring reliable access throughout the community.
Building on this success, we plan to return to Honduras in February 2025, expanding the team to 19 members (17 students and 2 staff members). This next phase will focus on developing innovative solutions using river power to pump water to local communities. We will collaborate with faculty and local engineers, testing designs before implementation to ensure long-term functionality.
Our efforts not only address community needs but also enrich students’ practical skills and foster a deep understanding of global water access challenges. Establishing lasting relationships with communities, faculty, and external supporters, we aim to make a meaningful impact and continue this initiative for years to come.
The 2025 brigade will require a budget of $60,000 to support the expanded team and project goals. We are committed to empowering students to use engineering for sustainable development and creating lasting connections that benefit both the communities we serve and the students who participate.
