President Jo Winwood mentioned that our full-time scribe and Award- Winning Bulletin Editor Franz has had a short stint in hospital and we all wish him well for a full recovery. [Thank you, I'm starting to twitch again... ☺ Ed.]

Guest Speaker- Tristan Hardwick from CARDIACSAFE.
Ray Higgs introduced Tristan and his father Lawrence, whose company supplied the Defibrillator to our project shed. Tristand has been working with the training of our associate members at the shed for the defibrillator recently purchased. He was accompanied by his father, Laurie Hardwick.

Tristan commenced training for defibrillators in 2015, and includes QFS as his clients. If you encounter an unconscious person who has suffered cardiac arrest,  he referred to the well- known acronym of DRSABCD. They are of course Acknowledge the Danger, Response: is the patient responding?, Send for help, Open Airway, is the patient Breathing?, start Compression of chest and then Attach Defibrillator.
He demonstrated the operation of the defibrillator which our Club has purchased. It was very nifty and compact. There is a very easy part including the battery and chest pad which should be replaced every 4 years. The voice prompts make it fool proof to use. Once started it continues to apply a shock every 6 minutes until a heart rhythm is detected.

Statistics prove that without a defibrillator the chance of survival are about 10%. If a defibrillator is applied within 5 minutes of the heart stopping, the chances of survival increase to 75%.  The purchase price is approximately $2000 and is apparently the only device which is medically approved for a cardiac arrest.

Tristan emphasised that the whilst the defib is being prepared and the chest pads are being placed correctly, someone else should also do chest compression to the centre of the chest. On the Gold Coast the average response from an ambulance call-out is about 20 minutes, so it makes good sense to have a defibrillator on hand.

Tristan’s father, Laurie encouraged our club to consider purchasing and installing defibs in the community. Apparently, it is widely supported in Victoria, where over 4000 have been installed in public places supported by service clubs.

Other Business:
Gold Coast Business Expo
Darrell Brown advised that he needs volunteers for ‘bump in’ at Metricon commencing at 12 noon on Wednesday 22 May. The actual venue is the old basketball stadium immediately to the west of Metricon, which is a small 2 story building. The entrance to the building is from the western side.
President Jo has a list of volunteers for the actual Expo commencing at 6.30am on Thursday 23 May. Darrell advised that ‘bump out’ will commence at 3.30pm that afternoon, when more volunteers are required. Darrell said that our Club hopes to raise $2000 on the day.

Club Change Over Luncheon
President Elect Mario advised that our Change Over Luncheon is to be held Sunday 23 June. Graeme Isaacson has investigated a variety of possible different venues. A decision has been made for The Links at Hope Island, where we will receive a 2-course meal for $30 per head.

Wheelchair Project – Fund Raising
PP George Keily has been in recent discussion with Apple Marketing. They intend to undertake a new fundraising program commencing the last week in May. They will initially operate 5 days on the phones, and then send out brochures to interested persons. The whole program is expected to take 2 weeks, and will bring the amount raised for this period of 6 months to approximately $5000. Last year, Apple Marketing managed to raise $5800.
George was happy to report that since Apple Marketing has been managing this role for the last 18 years for the Wheelchairs, they have raised approximately $975,000! Where the Wheelchair costs are still only $100 each, this equates to 9750 wheel chairs. What a great effort!

Shed Insurance Claim
Peter Morgan reported on progress in relation to the insurance claim for the 2 robberies/ break- ins at the Shed. The loss was approximately $8000 on 1st January 2018, and $2000 in June 2018. A full statement has been obtained from Des. The district insurance rep has received copies of all documents, and is now asking for a police report. Des has requested this, but it still has not come through. Peter Morgan to follow up whether this is necessary, as the insurance company should be able to obtain this report directly.
