The pandemic has created wide-ranging impacts, particularly on members of the Black community. One effect is in the availability of doulas for Black mothers-to-be, as in-person contact puts both the doula and mother at risk. Doulas are trained professionals who provide continuous physical, emotional and informational support to a mother before, during and shortly after childbirth to help her achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible.

Doulas are trained professionals who provide continuous physical, emotional and informational support to a mother before, during and shortly after childbirth to help her achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible. To enable the support of doulas, Hennepin Healthcare initiated a pilot program this summer, which connects Black community doulas with pregnant Black women virtually, with participants using a smartphone connection to provide this support safely. The pilot is currently only available to women living in North Minneapolis. As pregnant Black women initiate prenatal care at Hennepin Healthcare , the organization will contact women who are eligible to join the program. Thus far, fifteen expectant mothers have joined the program, with three so far giving birth. Hennepin Healthcare has also partnered with UCare to offer the support of a culturally congruent community health work to help connect women with resources to meet broader needs. Participants also receive a New Mom and Baby Kit including diapers, onesies, and other helpful items, contributed by multiple Rotary clubs.
This pilot program was funded by the Rotary Club of North Minneapolis, which worked with other Rotary Clubs and community partners to raise over $40,000 to support this and other programs for Black pregnant women.
