Education and Work Experience for Young Adults From Underserved and Low-Income Communities

Urban Corps serves as a bridge to a better life for young adults ages 18-26.  They provide paid job training, support services, and a second chance to earn a high school diploma, while simultaneously offering a variety of professional services to the community.  Urban Corps youth gain job skills on environmental, construction, and community projects. Whether planting a tree, removing graffiti, working in the San Diego River, improving a park, or rehabilitating low-income homes, their Corpsmembers improve themselves while improving the San Diego region.

Lauren Welch, has spent her professional life working in non-profit development and programming, including working for Habitat for Humanity in Georgia and United Way in North Carolina. Lauren came to Urban Corps of San Diego County in April 2018 as the Grant Writer. Over the past fiscal year, Lauren has applied for close to 90 foundation, corporation and state grants, adding up to 3.2 million dollars awarded in grant funding to the agency. Lauren works with multiple local non-profits and municipalities in San Diego County to bring additional funding to Urban Corps through their own project applications. In May 2019, Lauren was promoted to the role of Development Manager overseeing grants, marketing, communications and donor relations for the agency.
