In late 1969, a group of Native American activists took over Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay. The closed-down federal penitentiary became the site of a 19 month occupation by Indians of All Tribes members that brought attention to Native American rights and sweeping changes in the way Federal Government treated Indian Tribes. |
