The Benefits of Fishing for Kids

Patience
An activity that takes kids away from their screens and devices is always a win. One that teaches them the value of patiently waiting for results, instead of instant gratification, is a great life lesson. There's also a chance they might not catch anything, which can be a lesson in dealing with disappointment, as well as understanding that there's more to fishing than just catching fish. There's the other benefits noted below!

Building a Love for the Outdoors
When children learn to appreciate and love nature, they grow up to be adults who want to do their part in protecting it. One of Rotary's areas of focus is supporting the environment, so this event is geared towards showing the next generation how beautiful nature can be.

Creates Bonds
Fishing is a great group activity, whether it's family, friends or meeting new people with a shared interest. While everyone is individually casting their lines, there's plenty of time to chat and connect while fishing.

Decreases Stress
There are many articles you can find online about the benefits of being in nature, about the power of being around trees, or having your hands or feet in the grass and dirt. It's a relaxing and rejuvenating time for people of any age! Being near water also has a calming effect. All of this is good for your heart rate, blood pressure, and for taking deep breaths that can help you release your worries.

It's Fun!
Fishing is not fast-paced, but that doesn't mean it's not a good time. You can make it competitive to see who can catch the most fish or the biggest fish. You can share in laughs and oral history that makes for wonderful memories with the people fishing alongside you, all while enjoying the outdoors!
