Providing Aid When Countries Don't: ShelterBox

Ryder Evans and David Sundstrom

Nov 06, 2026 12:00 PM

Note venue change (no meeting at Bally's today): meeting to be held at Ageless Zen, 218 Elks Point Rd #10327, Zephyr Cove, NV 89448.

Dave Sundstrom is a member of Reno Sunrise Rotary Club; Ryder Evans is a member of our own Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club. Both are ambassadors for ShelterBox and will be presenting to the club today.

ShelterBox has a goal of helping people rebuild and be self-sufficient after a disaster.  It partners with Rotary International and has served 3 million people since it was created.

Tools, cooking supplies, water purifiers, blankets and solar-powered flashlights and lanters are included in their kits, modified to meet the particular needs.  The solar-powered lights have USB ports to charge cell phones.  The kits are often put together using local sources which provides economic benefits as well.

An estimated 130 million individuals are displaced worldwide. ShelterBox is there to help them get back on their feet.

What Does a Grateful Nation Owe Its Veterans?

Kat Miller

Nov 13, 2026 12:00 PM

Note venue change (we won't be meeting at Bally's today) and other information:   400 Ridge Club Drive, Stateline, NV 89449.  "Parking is free-park in any open spot excepting in the garages or the thirty minute spots." To register: email Katie Baumruck by November 12 at kbaumruck@holidayinnclub.com and indicate any food allergies or dietary restrictions. All veterans are invited to attend free of charge. The general public is also invited to join the celebration. The delicious lunch is $26 featuring a custom pasta buffet with Tuscan chicken, salad, garlic knots and cookies. There will also be a no host beer and wine bar.

Colonel (Ret.) Katherine “Kat” Miller served 34 years in the U.S. Army, culminating her career as a brigade commander in Afghanistan and commander of the Department of Defense's largest correctional organization. During three Pentagon assignments, she helped advance strategic Army and joint-service priorities, serving on senior leadership initiatives groups and high-priority joint task forces.

Kat will give a lively presentation on “What does a grateful nation owe its veterans?

Following her military retirement, Kat served as an Associate Professor with the University of Maryland, teaching undergraduate courses, and later developed and taught a graduate-level course for the University of Nevada, Reno's Justice Management Program.

She was subsequently appointed by two Nevada governors to serve as Director of the
Nevada Department of Veterans Services, a role she held for 10 years.

Kat holds a Master of Science degree from the U.S. Army War College and a Master of Public
Administration from Roosevelt University in Chicago.

With more than 40 years of leadership experience in military and veterans affairs, Kat's
expertise includes strategic planning, public safety, corrections, criminal investigations, crisis
management, veterans healthcare, memorial affairs, and veterans benefits.

Kat has served on numerous national and state boards supporting veterans and community
well-being, including the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Rural Veterans Advisory Board,
the National Association of State Directors of Veterans Affairs, NAMI Nevada, and the
Nevada Governor's Interagency Council on Homelessness.

A proud advocate for veterans, Kat remains active in many veterans, public safety, and
community organizations. One such organization is Rotary, where she proudly served as
President of the Rotary Club of Reno Central and continues to embrace Rotary's
commitment to service above self. She and her husband, also a retired Army colonel, are
the proud parents of two Army veterans and enjoy exploring Nevada through hiking, skiing,
and searching for unique rocks and minerals.
