The success of leading change whether it be organizational or in our communities is challenging but nevertheless important.

Change is brought about by factors many of which are unforeseen.

We only have to look at the Pandemic to realise the importance of sound leadership, without which, we as citizens will not be prepared to commit to the goals established to lead us to a safer world.

There are so many factors which influence the leadership style required to implement change.

In a corporate or organizational sense, we can measure the results achieved by the operation through the quality of its leadership. It is leadership style that frequently determines success or failure of a company and of course the future security of its employees.

Through any organization its success will be determined by the “buy in” of those who are required to contribute.

In an employment situation times of stress for the organization as a whole will occur as the need to make changes becomes a priority in order to compete or survive. This translates to a desire of employees to cling to what they know and feel safe with.

Examination of the main reasons for those employees to resist change are
  • Fear or uncertainty
  • Mistrust
  • Loss of job control
  • Bad timing
  • The individual’s predisposition to change
The ability to lead organisational change is one of the most critical skills in a rapidly changing world. Those who seek to lead in these turbulent times will require an ability to recognize that all those they lead cannot be managed in the same way.

To possess a social understanding with an ability to “read” those whom they lead is of paramount importance and an understanding of the motivational needs of individuals is needed before a cohesive team is formed.

A better educated workforce or community will require a greater opportunity to contribute to the decision-making process on matters that affect them. Rather than consultation be seen as a threat to managers it should be seen as a collaborative asset.

In summary a successful change is one that delivers its intended benefits.

Simple does not mean easy. Achieving success requires committed, equipped leaders and managers who engage with people to foster individual adoption of the change that can only lead to higher performance of a team or organization.
